Moving to Spain soon and not sure what to do about my UK driving license.
We will no longer have a UK address. What happens if we send DVLA details of our Spanish address?
Can we have a Spanish address on a UK license? We will still be British tax payers!

You have 2 choices.
1. Retain your UK licence until it expires - it must be the card ID type to be legal in Spain. It is also advisable to take the Spanish health check as well to be 100% legal. DVLC will not register your Spanish address and neither will they issue you a new one when you are resident in Spain.

2. Once you are a resident and have NIE and the residents certificate you can swop to a Spanish Licence which to be honest if you are planning to be a long term permanent resident is advisable.

Dont confuse this with paying tax for DLs that is irrelevant.

Robi,
    Here is my dilemma.
I am working overseas, and my UK driving photo id license is now not valid as:

A: I lost it.
B: I no longer have a UK address.

I have a villa in Spain though, which I rent but as yet I’m not a resident - as I’m not there..

Can I,
Get a Spanish Driving License on my next visit with:
Passport, NIE & Spanish utility bill - my villa ??

Thanks;
DSB.

The short answer is no - you have to be resident to get a Spanish driving licence. Either decide if you are really resident in the UK give the DVLC an address of say a relative or go resident in Spain but then your problem is if you don’t surrender a UK license to the Spanish DGT they will not issue you with a Spanish one because they will probably think you are banned or have never held one and no you can’t put a Spanish address on a UK licence.

The bottom line is you need to replace your UK licence. Don’t forget driving here without a licence is a very serious offence.

DVLA Reply:-

I am sorry, but if you are no longer resident in GB, it is not possible to
reissue your British licence.

As you have lost your licence, please make enquiries with the Licence
Issuing Authority in the country in which you now reside regarding advice on
driving there.

Should the Spanish licensing authorities require confirmation of your driving
licence details, please telephone the Centre to request a certificate of
entitlement.

Switchboard Telephone No. 01792 78 2341

Opening Hours - Monday to Friday 8.15am - 4.30pm

A fee of ?5.00 is charged to cover the cost of issuing a certificate giving
licensing details (a D737 certificate).

When you telephone the Centre you will be asked to provide your full
personal details or driver number and details of your credit/debit card
number (we accept Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard and Maestro). If the
credit/debit card holder is someone other than yourself we will also need to
speak to them.
—END PASTE—

I have heard lots of stories than non residents of Spain, English persons like myself, CAN get a Spanish License without being a resident.
As long as the health check is not older than 30days, NIE, D737, and a utility bill if needed are present at time of application made..

Shouldn’t be as bad as first thought. Get the D737 mailed to my Sister for forwarding to me overseas etc.
Then Spanish License when I visit next time around.

Beats visiting the most expensive Country in the World for gas and smokes etc :O
Cheers;

Hello,

I am new to the forum and am in the situation where I have lost my UK licence before I could swap it for a Spanish licence. I have seen a post about this but it is dated 2009. I just wanted to check whether it is still the case. The post says that the DVLA will issue a D737 certificate that is accepted by the Spanish authorities. Is this still true?

Regards
Christine

Indeed, just call them up and they will ship the D Form to you anywhere in the world…
From what I hear, good luck in getting a Spanish License…
