I understand there has been a lot of discussion on this, but unfortunately am new to this site. I am a South African citizen and have been offered a job in Spain and have the following questions if anyoen can answer. I want to confirm what I have found out on other websites and through the Spanish High Commission. 1. Can I have a work permit for one company, but working for another company as well? 2. Can i apply for my NIE number without a Work Permit in my passport? 3. Can I extend my 3 month holiday visa whilst in Spain until such time it is time for me to return to S.A. to obtain my Work Permit? 4. Am I looking at a 4 month wait for my Work Permit or more? 5. Do i have to hand my documentation in Spain AND the High Commission in my country of origin South Africa?

Anyway, let’s see here:
1. Yes, you can work for another company at the same time (99% sure)
2. Yes, you can apply for your NIE before you even get to Spain.
3. No, technically you can’t (not that I’m aware of anyway). A lot of people stay past their tourist visa for one reason or another without any recourse; they don’t come looking for you and they don’t check passports that carefully. Probably it would be better not to do so though.
4. See our page on work visas. Yes, it could be 4 months, sometimes longer, maybe shorter. Welcome to Spanish bureaucracy… :(

Yes under certain conditions

Yes and even more, it depends on the kind of work and the “Contingente”, delicate matter.

What documentation are you talking about, your passport?
3. Can I extend my 3 month holiday visa whilst in Spain until such time it is time for me to return to S.A. to obtain my Work Permit?
Yes under certain conditions
