Hiya
I’m moving to spain, arriving beginning of August.
Is it true shops etc will be closed for the month?
We are hoping to start building work, so would need the building supplies/DIY type shops.
Will be in the Tarragona Area.

thanks for any information
cheers

If you are in the touristic area, the shops will be open !!
August is the holiday month for the Spanish inland.

Hi Elvis…

I am sorry if you think the next bit is Harsh…

But your question of all shops closed for a month is really rather Stupid….

I live In Tarragona and I can assure you Everything is Open Unless there is a melt down or Public holiday even then some shops are still open!

All shops are open @ normal times…. Except for Fiestas or Bank holiday and yeap each town has there own holiday.

Tarragona Industrial Estate Were all the Big Retail Shops including Builders yards will be open normal times…

If your lucky and Go there in the middle of august and you have kids I recommend you take them to the Renault garage as next to the Garage there will be a Circus that World famous (No Animal Circus)

Good luck on your building project

Mac…

Hi Mac
Well, I have found out that although some people say “shops close down in spain in august” it isn’t true for the kind of thing i’m looking for, in the area i will be in.
doesn’t seem like a stupid question, seems like a valid one, which you have provided an extremely useful answer to.

thanks

If I may…

Elvis, August is pretty much shut down time for everyone not inclined to make a huge buck off the tourist trade. Yes, a TON of shops do close down. All the hardware stores were indeed closed for the entire month of August near one of my old apartments.

These days there are plenty of big franchise style places that stay open however, so look to those places for help during your August time of need. 😉
