Hi all:

I’m fairly new to the forum, so please bear with me.  My husband and I are moving to Spain within the week and we are bringing our dog with us.  The dog is approx. 14 kilos so we will have to fly him with baggage.  I have searched and searched but can find no definitive answer in regards to what paperwork we will need for him to fly from the US to Madrid on Iberia.  We have no stop-overs between Chicago and Madrid.  I was able to get a hold of a representative from Iberia who said that he needed a Vetrinarian passport?  Anyone know what the heck that is??  I will have the completed APHIS form with signature as well as the “certificado veterinario” with me.  Also, we have had our dog for about 4 years, having adopted him from a shelter in California.  He was implanted with a non-ISO microchip given his rabies shots etc.  We have kept up with all of his rabies shots and so forth.  About 3 weeks ago, I took him to our local vet and had him implanted with one of the ISO-standard chips as well as another rabies shot.  I am concerned that this last rabies shot will have occured just short of the “21 day requirement” that I have read about on some sites.  I know I have a lot of information here, but any help/reassurance from anyone else who has dealt with this before will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the boards…I don’t know if the answers to your question are answered fully in this article but it might just help.

See particularly the section on US/ Canada
Hopefully the answers are contained here.

There is a lot of information on the Europa website but its all very legalese and I for one found it extremely heavy going sorting out the wood from the trees!

Well I do know that the dog will need a Rabbies passport… Here in The EU a dog can travel through the EU If he has been Vacinated against Rabbies He then gets a passport and stamped by vet.

How long is the flight as I know there is a new law an animal cannot travel for more than certain period of time I think “I THINK” its 6-7 hours?

I maybe wrong there is other people with better knowledge about animals that travel than myself…. that may answer later on…

Also found this; it’s a definitive document published by AENA the Spanish Aviation Authority concerning the movement of pets into Spain…

Confused? Welcome to Spain!

Thank you everyone for your quick responses.  Based upon the materials you all have provided, I think we should be good.  Thank you again.

Your best bet is to find a vet who deals with pet passports, they will have all the info you need.If not contact the airline and they will rec one.
