Hmmm, seems like you caught them on the wrong day. Last time I went (albeit a while ago)I told my friend to bring everything including the kitchen sink and the tax guy looked at nothing! Except the FD9

Given you had already paid Spanish tax (surely proving you are serious) then I am amazed they made it so difficult (I expect he/she wanted to be on the beach!) and I agree I encouraged you to go in person (certainly as against using the post) but I suppose the Spanish culture is more towards dealing with gestorias than direct with the client!

If it is of any consolation - I do get the situation in reverse from my Spanish wife who (before we met) lived in London and had to deal with UK bureaucracy…..

Anyway I hope it is all worth it because I know many people pay less tax than they would in the UK (especially if they have a mortgage)

Thanks for sharing!

Hi well thank you for trying to help me, I agree with you I must stick at it because I am better paying tax in spain than in the uk I save quite a lot of money by doing so. The form he gave me was a printed A4 form which gives me the impression that it is standard procedure, I also think that the UK income tax returns are very beurocratic I even had an employee of the UK tax office telling me that my latest tax return looked very complex.
Having said that Im going to persevere with that as it would appear in part to be a duplicatiion of the FD9
I was prepared when I went to the Spanish Tax office I even had an introduction and what I wanted transcribed into Spanish but the man behind the desk discarded it and took the FD9.s off me without even looking at the interpretation I had the feeling that he was fluent in English but like the Doctors,Town Hall staff, they are discouraged from speaking English to you.
I hope one day that I will be able to relax and enjoy what time I have here in Spain, without having the hassle and worry everytime you have to go and see an official.

Ok here is the thing -

My Spanish wife has told me that a friend of hers has contacts in the Spanish Tax office and the problem is (as usual) some people have been scamming it - getting their FD9 signed in Spain sending it to the UK and then not declaring here - bottom line not paying any tax anywhere.

So watch out for even more process changes and checks to stop fraud.

Yes but this does not relate to me because I showed him a signed copy of my renta 2008 which showed that I have paid tax in Spain for the year 2008. Yet he still did not accept my other documents. He should of realised that I was serious about paying tax in spain because I showed him that I had already paid the tax to the Spanish Government for the year . I think it is a case of being English that prevented my form from being signed. I dont think a spaniard would of been treated the way I was sorry to say this but it is becoming increasingly being made aware to me. I have just come from a community meeting and a spanish president got elected because the English president resigned because of all the arguments and the Spanish president said that an English person should not be elected as president because they do not know the laws of spain. This has got nothing to do with my current situation I know but I am emphasising a point. There were no signs in German Italian French or any other language to the effect that if you could not speak spanish you need an interpreter.
