Just to point out though, there’s a reason that forums need to have rules or guidelines. I moderate on the SI Games - “Football Manager 2009” game forums. Believe me, I would imagine moderating here is child’s play compared to the SI Games forums. There’s a lot of numpties post there.

As for posting links to other sites, the moderators have to be careful with such links, because they and the site administrators can be held responsible, albeit inadvertantly, if links to any sites that are potentially illegal or breach copyright laws, especially if they’re hotlinks direct to any media.

With that in mind, I would say that it’s more than fair to discuss links in an open forum, but not to actually link to them. Take my earlier post for example:

Normally if there?s a series I want to watch, like series 3 of Heroes for me at the moment, then I watch it free and legitimately online. Now my internet speeds are good, I can watch the episodes in streaming HD whenever I want to.

There?s plenty of legitimate sites to do this from. Just google ?watch [insert series name] online? and you?ll find plenty of links.

Although this explains what I am doing and how, it doesn’t link to anything directly, though provides enough information for readers to do the same thing themselves if they want to. Simple and within the forum guidelines.

In all fairness, I can’t think of any other expat forum that allows forum users to use links to their own websites or business’ in their post signatures, allows users to post free advertising links within the “Business Services” forum, all for free. So for that, we should be very grateful.

Beleive me also when I say, that I think these forums are also very fairly moderated, given I’m used to moderating myself at a more complex and difficult level it’s fair to say.

Hmmmm,, the only issue I have with moderation is that basically it is a form of censorship, and on occasion can be quite arbitrary, I understand all the leqal bits, but that can be dealt with by disclaimers. 

However there are some very useful links about that people should know of, for example Marbella Lawyers, UK DWP,  how to get UK TV on line via VPN,  so no being able to publish those is a little counterproductive,,, difficult to find a good balance i suspect!!

mike48t - I hear where you’re coming from about censorship, but after the landmark Pirate Bay case, webmasters have to be especially careful now, because it’s set a legal president that the big companies can point the finger at “hosts” of even links. Totally wrong in my opinion, but it’s far easier for them to do that than actually chase the real culprits. The law is an ass, they say though…

As for providing useful links, I find it’s always handy to contact the site admin or mods beforehand to check it’s ok. I know Jurdy is online most of the time it seems, so it wouldn’t take him long to reply with a “yay” or a “nay”. 😉

Although this forum is different in that it’s almost entirely adults who use it, the SI Games forum I moderate on, is used by a wide age range. Our youngest member is 7 years old, our oldest is 78. We have set in place “swear” filters, we strongly moderate unsuitable comments, such as racial hatred, rape, or bullying. They’re in place to protect the younger audience. Believe me, parents do complain if they see anything untoward, even though the forums have a disclaimer upon entry.

The problem these days, Somebody or someone, somewhere, must always be held to account, even within the internet. It does lessen the “freedom” we would all like to see on the internet and I’m all for less censorship. Unfortunately it’s usually the case that there’s always a minority who spoil things for everyone else.

Recently we received a lot of complaints on the SI Games forums because another user posted a link to download files for the game. That in itself wasn’t a problem, but the file host they used featured lots of XXX rated porn adverts. Obviously there were a lot of upset parents who were’nt happy when they saw the link and the ads, thus asking for it to be taken down.

Ultimately it depends on the nature of the forum and it’s audience. The particular area that I moderate is pretty free of problems normally, but I occasionally have to oversee other areas of the forums, which are a problem. Whenever anyone signs up to any forum, most have guidelines or rules, which if the user doesn’t agree with, then it’s up to them if they sign up or not. There’s no excuse if they feel aggrieved when they go against those rules or guidelines, so it’s fair enough it the admin/mods take issue.

Do SKY change them every year ? I’m concerned that if I get a Sky system from a local vendor, I will incur problems like the other posts when these cards get switched out.

I would be going through a British vendor in Spain when I decide to get hooked up, so me having a Sky card registered in the Uk is out of the question.

This white card switch sounds a nightmare for Spanish bought cards then eh ??

they have been allowed 1 extra year this time around, as the renewal was due at the same time as the launch of freeview ,in the UK.
Everyone will need to have a new white card if they wish to continue receiving the same as they do now.
If you have a uk address with a sky box and telephone line you can get one for ?20 direct from them and activate it in a box via a uk phone line.
As most don’t have this luxury or facility we have to rely on being supplied by local companies that can obtain cards preactivated and ready to go.
all sky monthly contract cards will be sent free of charge by sky to the uk address it is registered at.
If you are paying an annual hosting fee to a company to use one of their address’ you will have to contact them when the message comes on your screen.
If you have a freesat channel 5 card this will not be sent free you will have to obtain a preactivated replacement
In most cases this is how you will have obtained your last card which has worked for the last 6 years or so.
Yes they are more expensive here but so is bisto, pg tips etc it is just about choice if you want these british things in Spain they will always cost you more.

If you got your own freesatfromsky card less that 3 years ago you may be entitled to a free replacement viewing card.

Your replacement card will be delivered to the UK address you supply.
It will be pre activated.
YOu DO NEED to return your existing card to Sky in the pre paid envelope however (cards are property of Sky, and this will also allow them to determine which cards are being genuinly replaced or being passed off to an agent for resale)

If you got your card over 3 years ago you wil need to arrnage a new white freesatfromsky veiwing card.

If you do nothing then you will lose access to the following FTV channels:

ITV1 (in these regions only: Anglia W, Central SW, Mer N, Mer SE, TT S, Yorks E)
Channel 4 HD
FIVE
FIVE USA, FIVE USA +1, FIVER, FIVER +1
Sky 3

You will not lose access to BBC channels (they have not needed a card for the last 6 years!), or the free regionss of ITV1, ITV2,3,4, and C4 and Five are also available for free without a sky card - although reception may be limited.
