Does anyone know if it a legal requirement that an independent translator be used when signing at Notary? By independent, I mean a translator who has no financial interest in the documents which are being signed.

It is certainly preferable and many notaries now do insist on this in our area (Costa Blanca) but whether that is their rule or law I am not sure. But it makes sense!

Have you tried asking a law company, there is a new one in spain called “advoco” spanish lawers, accountants etc, but with english advisers, they reply on email to any simple questions, give them a try at http://www.advoco.es

Thank you both for replies.
I have been told by one lawyer that it is not a legal requirement, but at the discretion of the notary.
I am still looking into the issue, so any further comments appreciated.
