I am an American woman married to a Spaniard.  We are planning to move to Spain in 2011, maybe sooner.  I am a kidney transplant patient and wondered if I would be covered by the health care system in Spain for the immunosuppressant medication I need.  Do I need to live in Spain for a certain period of time before I am covered, or would I be covered because I am married to a Spaniard?  Would my prescriptions be covered?

Should we work with the Spanish Embassy in the USA before coming to Spain?

Thank you for any insight you can share!

annamaria,
once you get your tarjeta sanitaria you can choose your medico de cabecera and he or she can issue you your prescriptions. just try to get the residence visa from the spanish consulate before you finally move here.

Thank you so much, aritz,

I coincidentally am in the process of working on the documents for Spain, such as validating our marriage and the residence visa.  If you think I need to do anything more, please feel free to share!
