Is anybody able to identify a snake which I found in my back garden. Its slightly worrying as it was trying to get into the conservatory? I live near Loja, inland Andalucia. I will have to send a photo via email if anybody is able to help as the photo seems to be too big to attach. Thanks.

Hi David,

A photo or description will help us try to determine what type of snake it is. From what i have read there are very few dangerous snakes here in Spain, specifically the Montpellier snake which is very large (up to 2 meters) and 3 types of viper, of which only 1 (Lataste) is found in southern spain.

David;
I live not far from Loja, out in the campo to the south of Moraleda.
We have occsionally come across snakes in the area and despite my 3 dogs best efforts have so far managed to avoid direct contact.
Might I suggest you check out this website; http://www.iberianature.com/other-wildlife/reptiles-of-spain/snakes/ and check out the links provided in the sidebar…

BTW…and on a completely different subject… Do I get any sort of medal for finding Loja railway station…in the dark…?

Just had a look at the photo you sent and it looks like a Western Whip snake which you?ll be glad to know is not a venomous snake. This type of snake is rarely found this far south so you and your family are safe.
