The Costa’s radio stations seem to pump out a constant stream of ‘pop’ music of a kind one normally associates with cheap bars. You switch on, you channel change but on each station the music is exactly the same. Only when the presenter comes in do you know which station it is. That is choice of radio station. It is not choice of music.

All I want is some entertaining guests of real character and experience; thought provoking interludes, music with broad appeal. A radio station that explores, inspires; has a broad range format.

One gets the feeling that if radio stations were people they would all be wearing trainers and trackies; all tattooed and shaven-headed. What about easy listening; light classical   ...  music professionals who rather than strum can actually read music? Musicians who know that a piano has a keyboard and that Beethoven is a composer and not a dog. Can anyone suggest a radio station here on the Costa Blanca that does cater for the more discerning over-forties? Cheers.

Mike, have you looked into podcasts? Got an iPod and iTunes? If so, you’re set. I’m hooked on them. Basically it’s like having a portable radio station with only your favourite programming, with you wherever you are, for free, and mostly commercial-free.

Who listens to radio anymore?

Yes, you’re the next generation. As fast as I let go of the past and grasp something new I realise even this is old hat. Like, can’t we just pause for a moment. I can’t keep up.

Hey, sounds like you are on a good thing though. Anything that ends monopolies - and an impudent presumption of public tastes, has got to be a good thing. Power to the people - and real musicians.

Maybe true democracy will soon be ours via the Internet. I am a friend and fan of really talented musicians. If a way can be found for them to enter the public arena without patronage, whooppeee.

Hi Mike,

Indeed, there’s a bit of a generational thing to it, and certainly podcasting will evolve too, perhaps into something else. The benefits more than outweigh the additional complexities (which really aren’t bad!) however. Here’s a basic guide to getting going with iTunes podcasts:
http://www.podcastplatform.com/podcast-listening/quickstart-guide/itunes

Basically, download/install iTunes.

Click iTunes Store on the left, then Podcasts from the store view.

Search or browse for something interesting to you (also see iTunes University for some great lecture series!).

Click the Subscribe button for that series.

Whenever there is a new podcast, it will automatically be downloaded. iTunes keeps track of which ones you’ve listened to as well, showing a blue dot next to ones you have yet to hear, and a half blue dot for those only partially listened to.

Most US/Canadian/UK radio programs are now available in whole or part through podcasting. The variety, depth and breadth of choice is unreal. I’ve practiced Spanish and Japanese with programs for that, I listen to the latest and greatest in Indie Rock, I listen to Canadian news local to my hometown, I listen to the latest out of DC, and I catch the latest from the BBC in Spanish from “BBC Mundo”. It’s incredible. Go for it!

I am as tech-enabled as anyone including having an aux feed for the ipod in my car stereo, but I still wish I didnt have to make a choice between decent musical listening of my planning vs having the local news and travel info alongside a constant stream of cheesy rubbish tunes!  British radio, both music and voice, is one of the few things I miss about the UK, and we have indulged in 2 net radios for the house so I can get my R4 fix first thing before I am ready to face a laptop (or blast out Xfm for an afternoon’s housework!)
