Hi all,

is there anyone here living and working in Valencia, my husband really fancies the area and we are just wondering whether there is opportunity for work for him, he works in construction (labouring etc)  and also does pattern imprinted concrete (driveways etc.).  Also is there much of an expat community in the area and british children in the state schools.

Thanks

Hi Tezza

I was in Oliva and the Jalon valley at Easter and was surprised as to how many ExPats lived in the towns of Lliber, Alcalali, Jalon and Benigembla. Indeed in Benigembla we were told that as a result of an influx of 4 expat families the local primary school had sufficient numbers to remain open

(In the Living in Spain Mag May - June issue, there is an article on a rural guest house on that village and you can see for yourself)

The same can be said for the other villages as well, we walked into a cafe and half the people were expats and also in walked 4 builders who perform underpinning services for renovations…all of whom were British.

There is a huge amount of construction in the Costa Blanca area, Denia, Gandia etc so I suspect one could get a job

All in all a very nice place…sufficient to say I’m back for 3 weeks in the Summer and wish to move myself next June….

Hope this helps

We are moving to Valencia, near a village called Villalonga. There are a few expats there, in the Spanish school where my son will be going there are English, American , German and Dutch, but not a huge amount.
The whole area is lovely, not too far from the coast but not close enough to have premium property prices, We can’t wait! Go for it!!
I am in contact with a girl whose husband runs a construction company, i’m sure there would be work in the area for your husband.

Hi Valenciachick, thanks for your reply, I’ll have a look into Villalonga, it sounds like the type of place we are looking for.  If my husband can get work there then it would be 100% perfect.  We were thinking about Costa Blanca Torrevieja area but we just really want to be living somewhere more spanish than that, but our main worry was work for my husband.

How old is your son, I have a 7 year old and a 1 year old, I dont mind how many expat kids are in the school so long as hes not the only one!!!

If youv got any other information on the area that you think might interest us that would be great, thanks

😊
Hello!
We also looked at Torrevieja, for a few hours and to be frank, that was enough! We also looked at Sax, which was too large and sprawling for us, and Alcoy, which was very industrial looking not what we wanted. I have to say, when we went to Villalonga it just had that ‘we’re home’ feel to it!
Its not built up, although there are many improvements going on, any building seems to be low level and looks lovely, all ice cream colours! We found our house through a site we hadn’t found until we were out there after months of trawling the web here! look at http://www.plumproperties.es not sure if they do rentals but they help with everything else, they even took us to visit the schools!
My son that is coming with us will be 8 when we get there, young enough to pick up the language quickly. In fact, a young English girl at the school when asked if she could speak Spanish when she got there said ‘no, none but its so easy!!’ which put my mind at rest! My sons accent is so good! I think its because kids feel no embarrassment about thinking they look or sound silly like we do, they just get on and do it!!
Its only a short drive to Gandia, which has a large hypermarket, and a Mcdonalds!! (we allowed 1 visit in the fortnight!)
I would think the area is ideal for anyone with a young family, its lovely to see the kids all out playing together in the communal areas, not stuck in front of a playstation or telly!! 😊

Hi there,  thanks for that, looked at the plum properties site and saw a few prperties that look perfect for us.  We hope to be moved by the same sort of time as you, October time, we have our house up for sale at the moment, not many viewers yet though but thatll hopefully change now the weathers getting better.

Will you be ok to get you son into school with the term have already started when you arrive?  My son will also be 8 when we arrive.  It would be brill to keep in touch so that we can meet up if we end up in the same area.

i couldnt comment on schools but the expact community in ValCom is quite large.

Valencia and the rural areas around it are having a total craze in construction. Horizon is full of cranes wherever you go, so def one of the best places in spain to find construction work.

however you may want to think realistically about how much this work will be making you. Spanish salaries are generally lower and you have to be able to compete (whether in skill or pay) with large amount of immigrant labour from Eastern Europe and Latin America. Naturally, they won’t be asking for the same money as a builder in UK

best place in Valencia, is Valencia, downtown, and close around.  Best rentals, best economy, best job available, best quality of live.  Forget those communities around Valencia they are for people that have plenty of money already.  Even if you have money, Valencia is the best bet, you have concert halls, beaches, shopping plazes, etc.
