Hi All,

I?m looking for a bit of advice on something my husband and I really know nothing about - I hope someone can help!

I?m British and my husband is Spanish.  We live in Spain and plan on always doing so.  I?m pregnant at the moment and was just wondering about getting dual nationality for the baby when it?s born.  Is this a very difficult lengthy process, how is it done, and what advantages would there be for the child with Spainsh/British nationality??

Thanks everyone!!  I?d really appreciate any advice.

Laura

Hi Laura

This is something I have always wondered about too when the time comes - as I am English and my boyfriend is Spanish. I know that when the child gets to 18 he / she can choose what nantionality to be, but before that I really have no idea. I’d guess that if you live in Spain the nationality would be better off beinf Spanish…

Hope your pregnancy goes well and congrats!

laurainspain,
nationalities are acquired according to the laws of their respective countries.
british and spanish nationalities are also passed on by their parents to their children at birth.
since you live in spain, you and your husband will register your child at the local civil register.
you can also go to the british consulate and register the birth.
since you can get a spanish birth certificate from the local register and a british birth certificate from the consulate,
you can also get british and spanish passport for your child.
which one should you use?
whichever is convenient depending on the time and place.

Spain does not recognise dual nationality, the UK does.

If you want Spanish Nationality the authorities require proof that you surrendered your UK passport to the UK, as the UK recognises you as a UK national you will be on record and allowed all the rights of a UK passport holder.

It is a typical Spanish admin nightmare.

See the info here.
