There’s a facebook group started by some guys in Sweden I think, for co-ordinating liftshares across Europe - a positive and helpful response I think - http://www.facebook.com/carpooleurope
Also #getmehome and #ashtag for tweeters trying to swap lifts,
It’s a such a strange situation, a huge phenomenon affecting so many people, and for once no one to sue or blame or hate for such massive disruption. Instead genuine signs of solidarity and unity (OK not everywhere but it makes a change!)
Speaking of british humour, did you guys see that cartoon with the Prime Ministers debate and the volcano? I saw it about a quarter of the way through this news hour http://video.pbs.org/video/1471011340/
give an accurate depiction of as it happens live flight tracking across Europe.
To appear on these websites aircraft must be equipped with a particular piece of equipment; it’s not totally mandatory as yet, so there is actually a lot more activity going on than is actually depicted.
These two websites are currently among the busiest websites on the net, so if you have a problem opening them, just be patient; you will be able to just as soon as there is a gap!
Thankfully I got back before this all started. But a friend is ‘stranded 😉’ lol! in the UK.
I would have thought the travel industry would have got together and started to bus/train people South to get them back to long distance (US*/Oz/other) destinations. But it seems no one is that bothered????
I think this is a big wake up call for us ‘developed’ nations that air travel is such a big part of our life. How long will it take mail to get back/forth during this disruption?
Watching with interest 😉 ‘Every wo/man for himself’ it seems!

*ps _ - I am aware the cloud has now drifted across the USA and this is going to cause even more problems!
My unemployed friend went to Malaga airport to offer a car ride through Spain and France if they paid, but the queue of other peeps with the same idea resulted in the Policia setting up a check point into the airport.
I’ve also heard reports that the peeps of Galicia who use high powered speed boats for their import business (drugs) have been ferrying peeps across the Bay into northern France.
Also the Spanish seem to be welcoming peeps or rather charging airlines extra landing fees to use Madrid airport, whilst knowing the people have very little chance of leaving Madrid.AENA are making a lot of money.
‘no-fly’ zone may be imposed over Ireland tomorrow due to the drift south of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland, the Irish Aviation Authority has said.
In a statement at 5.30pm, the authority said it had informed Irish-based airlines that it is concerned that Irish airports may be impacted by the drift of the cloud caused by the north easterly winds.
“Current information from the Volcanic Ash Advice Centre (VAAC) suggests that a ?no-fly zone? may have to be imposed over Ireland tomorrow that may affect Dublin, Shannon and some regional airports,” the IAA said.
Will we all get hit two day on the mainland as 16 Aena’s airports closed due to the volcanic ash, chatted two few people who cought up in the Hot ash and there just sayying few extra days but Funds are low .
