We have just returned to Movistar (remember Telefonica is no more) for our ADSL after a year with Orange. The line is 10 MB we have 1 computer cabled into the router and 1 connecting via Conceptronic C54RU connected into a USB2 port. As this gizmo is around 4 yrs old is it able to maximise the fast ADSL line or would a newer WIFI gizmo work faster?

Hi Rob,

The USB Wireless Network Card that you have will work fine with you ADSL Line.
The speed that the card and the router communicates at is actually faster than your ADSL line.

I’d be interested to know what speed you actually get from a 10mbps Telefonica line.

OK thanks, does it matter where you site the router or the wifi gizmo (I have it on an extension cable into the tower) ie high - low…

PS The orange router did not have an antenna, but the new Movistar one does.

Hi Rob,

Yes it does matter where you site the router.

Wireless signals work fine in open spaces but if they are in different rooms, especially different floors, then the signal can become very weak.

It would be best to site the router away from any other devices that may cause interference.
If you still have problems with the signal then higher powered USB or PCI wireless card can be used.

Telefonica / Movistar DSL speeds are all over the place and have been for days…

On my 3Mbs service currently registering 450Kbs Down 270Kbs Up, yesterday 220 Kbs Up and Down. Best ever achieved is 2.5Mbs Down /270kbs Up but this only lasted for a couple of days then back to the more normal approx 1.1Mbs Down 270Up.

The fact that 2.5 is attainable at this location shows that they can do it when they want to but most of the time they don’t give a damn.

Reporting a dsl speed problem to the dsl helpline 902 357000 (Spanish speaking only) is pointless because they will insist the problem is with the customers kit…couldn’t possibly be a problem with the lines!

No point in trying to go elsewhere for dsl since they all use the same poor infrastructure…
