Anyone know what the laws are for driving these? I don’t really care if I had a car once there or not, but as I am more keen on living in a rural setting I would on occasion need some form of transport…..so a scooter seems perfect (although you would never catch me on one here in Canada as I would be laughed off the streets! hahaha)

As a visitor /non resident (16+) , if you have held a full “b” car license , for over one year you may ride a 49cc moped or scooter, if held for over three years you are allowed to ride up to a 125cc.

Legally (as in most countries) you must wear a safety helmet or risk getting fined by the police.

Thanks Matt…wonder if that applies for only EU citizens of for non-EU as well. I have had a valid Canadian drivers license for over 30 years.

I would eventually get my car drivers license there, but only after I was comfortable driving on the streets and understanding enough of the language and laws. No rush.

You can use your non-EU (Canadian) driving license for as long as you are classified as a visitor / non-resident, however upon receiving Spanish residency you must have a Spanish license to legally drive. So you would be required to take a Spanish driving test (written and practical) in order to obtain the Spanish license.

I believe you can apply to do the test in English in many of the bigger cities or if you move somewhere where there is a lot of English speaking expats (such as the costa’s).

When driving around as a non-resident you do need to keep your driving license and passport with you at all times though, in case you get stopped by the police.
