Hi everyone, i’m looking for some advice on moving to Gibraltar. Me and my partner are looking to move in Jan 2011 and i wanted to know some of the basic things when moving. Im from the UK so i no i don’t require a visa, just need to get a residence card stamped. Do you have like and NHS system over there or do you pay private insurance? Do you need a TV license? Do they have SKY TV over there? Is the internet at a good speed? Is there a high level of crime? Do they have public bus services? Do children go to nursery from 3 and go to school at 5 like in the UK? When you start working do you have to do anything or does the law automatically deduct tax? Please help me, a lot of sites just give the general information. Thanks in advance

Hi there

I realise you posted a while back, but hopefully this information will be of use:

In turn:

Persons moving from UK or other EU country do not require a visa, however it makes sense to register with the local authorities and get a civilian registration card. This entitles you to various privileges such as FREE healthcare. Its not the best in the world, admittedly, but it knocks the socks off the NHS and Spanish health care. Opticians and dentists, etc. are private and will need to be paid for. Private health insurance like HSA or BUPA would be useful in that regard as far as cutting these costs are concerned.

TV licence was abolished in Gibraltar about 5 years ago, however you will usually pay an annual fee for satellite costs (about ?100 - ?200 depending in the area / estate you are living in). All Gibraltar homes essentially get ‘free’ Sky and aside from the aformentioned costs, you can expect to get all UK terrestial channels as well as most Sky channels including the Sports and Movie channels.

Internet speeds are getting better in Gibratlar all the time. There are two main providers now (as opposed to just one, two years ago) so the competition is also quite good. You can check out the phone and internet packages offered on the websites of Gibtelecom and CTS Gibraltar. Both also offer contract and pay-as-you-go mobile phone deals.

Crime in Gibraltar is generally quite low and what little crime there is tends to be thefts / pickpocketing by seasonal drifters and (unfortunate to say) some opportunist Spaniards from across the border. You can walk around any area of Gibraltar at any time of night and day and not expect any trouble. However if you are not careful and leave your mobile on the bar whilst having a drink, someone might snatch it from you. All in all, its one of the safest places in Europe and therefore a great place to bring up kids.

Yes there is a public bus service with regular scheduled routes. New ‘blue’ buses were introduced recently and these are air-conditioned and modern. You can also find bus timetables online.

School system is exactly the same as the UK.

When you begin employment in Gibraltar, your employer will send you down to register at the tax office, then all PAYE will be deducted automatically at source. Tax is generally lower in Gibraltar than it is in the UK. Additionally there is no Council Tax, VAT, Inheritance Tax, CGT or duty paid on alcohol and cigarettes.

By the way, Gibraltar has a Marks and Spencer, BHS, Next, Top Shop, Monsoon and pretty much all the UK highstreet brands. There is also a Morissons supermarket which, although a little dearer than its Uk counterpart, is the perfect place to get all those items you need to make you feel right at home ...

Hope this has been useful. Any more questions, just ask.

Hi,
Persons who hold standard 6 month multiple visit visas are required to hold a separate visa for Gibraltar. In addition,non-EU nationals who reside in the UK and hold residence permits with a specified validity are required to obtain a visa in order to visit Gibraltar. If you will be visiting other countries during your stay in Gibraltar, please contact the relevant Embassies for further information regarding immigration. The Government of Gibraltar reserves the right to alter visa requirements for other nationals wishing to visit Gibraltar frequently and at short notice.
