I have had my NIE (regimen communitario) for 2 years,  I would like to take the next step to become a Spanish Citizen.  My wife is Spanish,  and I live and work in the US.  Is there any way of completing the process in the US?

Ok, Well I have a Friend that owns a restaurant in Barcelona, and I still have friends that live there that I could have things sent to.

No luck my friend.

I am going through the same process but I actually live in Spain. Some of the required documents you simply will not have, partially because part of the requirement is to have lived in Spain for at least 1 year since your marriage. You have to present the “empadronamiento” (certificate of residency in Spain) along with your work contracts, pay stubs, etc in Spain. Those are two items that would be pretty hard to submit if you are not here.

However, you can get a head start on the things you need from the US: an original birth certificate with an Apostille and and FBI criminal clearance with an Apostille. The FBI apostille is obtained through the department of State whereas the other is obtained through your state.

The US also requires actual residency for citizenship, makes sense I guess 😊
