Hi, does anyone know how to go about setting up a charity in Spain. What are the procedures etc.

Hi Beverly,

I have the same question as you. Did you ever get any answers to this?

Hi Matt!

I have the same question.  I see that this thread is a couple of years old and Beverly may be long gone.  But, perhaps we can help each other as we go along.  I am meeting with my attorney on Tuesday next week and will have more detail then.  In the meantime, do you know if (in Spain) donations to nonprofits are tax deductible?  It would be easier to get some of the local businesses on board for our cause if something were in it for them as well.

Cheers!

Hi Tavis,

I have a meeting about this this week, I’ll get back to you afterwards. Please feel free to send me a reminder 😉

Thanks for getting in touch.

I do not know if Chris Carnie counts as an international body, but I am sure I could offer helpful advice. He is the founder of research specialists factary perspective, and moved to Spain a few years after the creation of its first international office in Barcelona. I always found him knowledgeable and helpful.

Coincidentally I spoke with Chris last week. In summary:

Setting up a charitable foundation is very similar in Spain as it is in the UK. You’d need an asset base of around ?10k and a board of trustees as prerequisites to an application. The process takes around 12-18 months from beginning to end, the usual with any government based admin in Spain.

If you are looking for an easier way of raising money on behalf of an already established foundation, the process is much more straight forward and less time consuming. Firstly, find and contact the foundation of choice and explain what you want to do. They can then make you an official donor, I forget the term. It means that you may have some say of what any funds you raise are used for if you wish.

That’s all for njow.
