Advice on moving to Madrid

Hi everyone, I’m Matt, I’m 25 and currently living in the UK, and I’m hoping to move to Madrid in about 18 months time. My plan is to do a TEFL course in Madrid and then find a job. I spent 9 months there as a conversation assistant in 2005-06 and I go back and visit regularly, so I’m not completely unfamiliar with the place, but I’m hoping for some advice on a few things:

1. With the Spanish economy the way it is at present, is it easy to find teaching jobs?

2. Can anybody recommend (or have any opinions on) a TEFL course provider?

3. When is the best time of year to go? Currently I’m thinking June/July time.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

I’d say NO to 1), afraid can’t help on 2), 3) if I were you I’d anticipate a few months to allow a bit more time to settle down before 2011/2012 school term starts.

Thanks for that. When you look on the websites for course providers, they all claim that it’ll be easy to get a job afterwards, no idea what the situation is really like at the moment.

Ah, okay. Well, they’re the experts. My answer was just based on common sense (I mean MY common sense;), if they say so then there must be a reason. Hope someone will be more of a help. Best of luck.

I hope so anyway, I’m just a bit cautious about taking their word for it, after all they make money out of people doing their courses.

You shouldn’t have anhy trouble finding work in Madrid.  To give you an idea of the jobs currently available in Madrid: http://www.madridteacher.com/wanted-jobs-employment.htm.  I’d suggest being there in August to start job hunting just before the academic year starts.

well if you want to moving towards madrid then TEFL is must for you to find the best job in the field of teaching and i hope you will find it quite easily so i hope that you will spend there some good time and enjoy there and i think june , july is the good time for you to move spain but you must learn there national language it will help you a lot for the living there . thanks

Wow, that doesn’t sound or look like an English language paragraph.

Don Mateo—To answer your questions:

1. It is VERY difficult to find a teaching job right now.

2. No, you don’t really HAVE TO have a TEFL. Most of the TEFL programs are a waste of time, a rip-off, and you don’t really get many benefits in return.

3. Best time to come—late August-September.

Young Fogey

umairaraza100 post is a total waste of space; disregard it completely. He is an interloper from Pakistan who knows b****r all about Spain and used the site to SPAM a Pakistani translation service.

I have deleted his post.
