can I ask the electricity & water company to do a real reading before renters move in my apt?

Hi,

What is the norm when renters move in and have to pay the first bills when part of the bill would have been from my use?  Will the electricity and water company come in to read the meters if I ask them to or can I even do it myself if I can get hold of the keys to where the meters are kept?  Any advice greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

The utility companies will take or ask for a reading when you change the name on the contract.

If you are not changing the names (risky if it is a long let) why not just agree to pro rata the number of days each party is liable for?

I’ve found them very helpful on the phone and via endesaonline where I have always received help and guidance from them albeit I did have to wait 7 days once for an answer to an online query! I’ve managed to change name of contract holder (requested via endesaonline and documents submitted by email) and submitted a meter reading via their online portal. Have you registered online rather than just a straight email?

Answer to all Yes except register on-line.  attempted to about a month ago and received the message try again in a few days or something to that effect.
