Its a bit early just yet for the processional caterpillars.

March and April is the peak time for activity.

We have large numbers of pine trees in our campo area southwest of Granada, but over the last few years haven’t had a problem at any time of the year.

If its just general info you require check out ‘processional caterpillars’ on Google.

If you do find you have a problem contact the Seprona Branch of the Guardia Civil for information.

Do not disturb the nests or the caterpillars when they are on the move. The hairs are toxic and can cause inflammation. Do not as some people suggest set fire to the nests as at best the caterpillars hairs will be released into the wind and at worst you could start a forest fire…

If inhaled or eaten by pets, immediate veterinarian attention should be sought.

If you want to get rid of them, spray the nest with hair spray to keep the hairs from getting into the air, then cut off the branch and put it in your woodburner, or burn it in a controlled way.

Your local town hall usually offer a free service to come out and spray them (as they don’t want them either!)
Avoid at all costs contact with pets. They can kill!
Yes, they usually arrive a little later…
