Hello everybody, I’d appreciate any insights you can share.

My father-in-law has an apartment in El Campello, near Alicante. We’ll be driving down in early August, via the Portsmouth-Santander Ferry. We dock at about 20.00. With 3 children in the car, I’d like to break the journey, driving for a couple of hours & then staying overnight in modestly-priced accommodation.  I’m thinking of taking Santander - Burgos-Madrid - Alicante as a route.

I’d appreciate

1 - Any guidance on the route

2- recommendations on where to stay

Many thanks

Check out

The route you suggest is the normal route for this trip with the proviso that a slight deviation is recommended… About 50kms North of Madrid is the start of the M50 motorway which bypasses Madrid completely as opposed the the M30 or M40 which go through Madrid and can get really congested.

Hotel recommendation en route can also be found on viamichelin…

Since you arrive fairly late in the day, your suggestion of driving a couple of hours then overnighting is good; you should have a couple of hours of daylight to tackle the run through the Cantabrian Mountains. Burgos would be a good bet for an overnight stay. it still leaves a long haul trip for the following day but at least you’ll be doing the Madrid ringroad in daylight.

Hope this helps..
