I am Canadian and I recently married a Spanish girl and now I want to know what steps I need to take in order to get fully integrated here, specifically legal work and access to health care. From what I understand, I need the NIE to work here legally, but do I need my libro de familia or something first in order to apply for the NIE? And where and how do get this done?

On an unrelated note, are there free spanish lessons available to me now that I am a “new immigrant”?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi,
the libro de familia (family book) you will get from the town hall wherever you got married. This might take between 2 or three months until it comes out. With this book and some more documents you have to go to the Extranjeria (foreigners office). If you do not know too much about it I would recommend go together with somebody of a Gestoria. They do not charge too much but they know exactly the procedures

I know how it feels, when I moved from UK to Spain 3year’s ago it was hard. I strongly suggest if u want to make money and enjoy a bit of sun move to bigger cities. I am not aware english speaking jobs outside Barcelona or Madrid.

All the Best!!

Hi. I’m from the UK and want to get married to my Spanish fiancee. JazzCat, I know you’re Canadian, but how did you get married? What documents did you need and was it an easy or difficult process? Yesterday we went to the British Consulate and they were of no help. They told me to look on their website , which I’ve done a lot and things still don’t make much sense.
