Hi everyone.

I am starting a job in Sanlucar la Mayor (which I’m told is a village just outside of Seville) in August so I am trying to organise my move. I am 23 (soon to turn 24) and I will be moving out there on my own so I am searching for friends and maybe even potential flatmates my own age. I don’t really want to rent with a family as I would prefer to find flatmates in their mid to late 20’s to explore the area with. I have signed up to loads of different expat forums in the hope of finding some people I may be able to befriend in Seville who are around my age but so far I have had no luck and I am starting to feel a bit disheartened…. If there is anybody out there please get in touch!!!

Hoping to hear from you…

I honestly don’t know having never been to Seville. From looking on the map it seems to be just outside of the centre.

Thank you Cazzy, I am sure there will be lots of questions as my move gets closer… not least how to open a Spanish bank account! Yikes.. there is so much to think about! Have you got any advice on how to meet people when I am there? My biggest fear is being lonely…. Although I hear that it is beautiful in Seville so I am very excited about seeing the sights.

I have just looked at where you are moving to and its west of seville, it is not somewhere I have ever been, as we live east of seville. Do you speak spanish? Opening a bank account is easy, as long as you have an NIE number. Seville is very cosmopolitan, we live about 50 mins away in a small village. We mainly mix with the Spanish, there are a lot of ex pats about as well. You will probably find english speakers in seville because of the university. I expect the village you are going to is going to be ‘very spanish’, as it is quite a way from the city. I know a quite a few english speaking spaniards around your age but they all live near me. They were friends of my daughter who is the same age as you and used to live in spain. If you need any help let me know.

I don’t think I will live in Sanluca La Mayor as I would prefer to live somewhere more central (although I will have to work out how to get to work and back if I don’t live nearby).

I don’t speak Spanish yet but I plan to learn (hopefully i’ll pick it up quickly). I don’t want to be dependent on people translating for me! I am so excited about coming out there and I am sure i’ll make friends in no time.. I am a very sociable person!

I hadn’t thought of the university students…. I may end up living with some actually! I am still unsure where the best place for me is but I think I might be better off coming out and staying in a hostel until I find my feet.

Thanks for alll the advice Cazzy.. it would be great to stay in touch, especially once I am out there in sunny Seville 😊

hey charley,

me and my boyfriend live in seville, we are both 25 and work there as well.  Gives a yell when you get here and we will catch up, we know a few english people now, so will be happy to introduce you.  You’re right it can be very lonely when you don’t know anyone.

regards

I would love that! I am moving in August so let’s stay in touch and help each other out… I have got quite far now with moving stuff. Do you have any questions?

Have you thought about where you want to live?

Hola 😊
I went for an interview in Seville just over a week ago and then was offered the job a few days ago, so I really only started googling things last night once the news had sunk in lol!

I was looking up the zones of Seville last night and I think I might want to live in the centre because that is where my job is (I think, from my rubbish map-reading skills!) but if I find out that the centre is really near to other zones then I will look there too- I just dont wanna be late for work in the morning and Im terrible for that as it is haha!

I was on a site called loquo having a look, trying to get an idea of how much a decent place will set me back.seems to be quite a range of prices on there. Then I wonder is it pointless looking until I getout there and can view places! I have lived on my own the past couple of years and quite like that, but I have a feeling I would rather share in Seville, as it could be lonely and harder to integrate and meet people otherwise.

I have barely done any research on Seville yet, so I have a lot to do!

are you just going for a year and have you lived in Spain before? I spent my year abroad in Spain when I was 21 and have wanted to return ever since! Am starting to get excited!

That is fantastic news, congratulations. I have a job in Sanluca La Mayor which is outside of the centre but I want to live in the centre anyway and commute because it will be easier to meet people that way. I have been to spain lots of times before but never to Seville. I hear La Alameda is quite a good place to live because it is full of bars and restaurants etc. I have a 2 year contract to begin with so I will be there that long at least. If I like it I may stay much longer though.

I have been sharing for a few years now and I like having someone around to have a cuppa or a glass of wine with in the evening. I think I will look to live with someone, at least to begin with, because I don’t know how else to meet people. Do you speak Spanish then? I don’t but I am hoping to pick it up quite quickly.

I have been looking at how to ship my things out there. The best advice I have been given is to take as much as I can in a suitcase on a plane and post the rest to myself. I am not taking furniture or anything like that with me so it is only decorative stuff I am taking with me. How about you?

I found a webiste that is really useful http://www.roommatesevilla.com . They speak English and they deal with a lot of expats so they are quite helpful.

So are you going out there on your own too? Is that what you did last time? I am so excited but I am also terrified because I have never lived abroad before and I am doing it on my own this time!

I will be there at least a year but possibly much longer , depending on how next year goes. Where do you live now- Im in NI.

I do speak Spanish but its quite rusty- I was fluent after my year abroad but have never used it at that level really since. I really want to get it back to the way it was and I know itll happen living there!

Oh great,I will check out that website now.

yeah Im going on my own, and the last time I went with uni friends so we did all the new stuff together, its a bit more daunting this time! I do know two people over there tho, acquaintances from uni, so Im hoping they will give me some advice!

I think the best thing would be to go over near the end of Aug and viewing places until the perfect place arises. I will keep looking at the sites in the meantime though.

Well good luck with your searching and moving. I am sure you’ll be ok. I have never even been there before. a don’t know a single person and I don’t speak Spanish so at least you are at a slight adventage! Let me know if you find anything useful out. I need all the help I can get. Please do stay in touch, it would be great to have someone to chat to when i get out there.

Best of luck with everything.
