Hi everybody, my name’s Charlotte. I’m already an expat, have been living in France for the last 8 years, but have recently made the decision with my partner to up sticks again and open a business in Spain.

So, I’m starting this new adventure with getting as much information as possible! We are planning to move around the end of 2013 (need to save up some more before investing!).

I’m British so I know for my French experience that I can work anywhere in the EU without having to apply for a work permit or visa etc however, this is where it gets tricky. My partner was sent to live with family in France from Mali when he was 6 years old. He has never left France (holidays aside) but typical male never got round to apply for citizenship when he was 18. So his nationality is still Malien, but he has residency in France.

We’ve applied recently for him to have the French nationality but it’s a long process and we won’t get the reply for another 18 months maybe more! Plus, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be granted French nationality.

So how do we go about him working and living in Spain? We are planning on setting up our own business so we’ll be self employed, does this change anything?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’ve had a look on the web and the info isn’t very clear!

thanks everyone 😊
