Hi!

I’m a Norwegian working aboard a cruise ship, and I’ve decided to move to Spain. I lived in Torremolinos and Fuengirola for a few years when I was younger, and I really miss the lifestyle. Currently I live in Oslo, Norway, and I’ve found that it will be lots cheaper for me to rent in Spain and commute by plane when going off to work.

I have checked places like fotocasa.es and habitamos.com and it looks like I can get a very good deal on a flat in central Malaga. If anyone have any tips about companies that deal in rentals I’d love to hear about them. Likewise if you have any horror stories 😉

I’ll be going to Malaga around June 10. to check out some flats, and if everything goes ok with getting rid of my current flat in Oslo, I’ll be moving down in July/August.

Hi Norseman,

I first moved to M?laga in 1991, bought an apartment there in 1998, and although I’m currently living in Miami Beach, Florida, my wife and I will be in Spain for the summer from 13 June.

Perhaps we could meet up. ?Hablas espa?ol? I’m English, but my Spanish is good and I have a lot of contacts in the city of M?laga.

Thanks for your reply.

I’ll be in Malaga between june 9 - 15. to meet with some companies renting flats. If you have the time it would be great to meet up. Send me your phone number or email in a PM, and I’ll be in touch. My Spanish is very rusty so expect to get an English speaking call!

Cheers

Hi Norseman,

Bear in mind that the summer can be a bad time to start a rental contact if the apartment is in an an area where tourists are likely to be renting. People tend to try to get as much money as they can during the holiday season and then then look for a long-term tenant in the autumn.

Long-term is likely to be 11 months. This is because after 12 months the renter has security of tenure. My wife has been renting out an apartment in Benalm?dena Costa for several years, giving the tenant a new contract every 11 months.

I’ve sent you a PM with my contact details.

I’ll be looking for a regular apartment in central M?laga so hopefully I won’t be competing with holiday makers. The last few days have been spent looking for flats and prices on the net, but it seems safer to go down there and meet up with professional companies.

I found what looked like a great deal on fotocasa.es and it turned out to be a scam. I actually got the exact same email that’s reported in this thread:

I’m not even mad, it’s all part of the adventure of moving abroad 😊

Look for an advertising paper called Segundamano (the M?laga edition), which has an online version. Also you can buy it at newsstands. I seem to remember that it comes out twice a week. It has ads for rentals, both private and real estate agents.

There are a couple of free monthly advertising papers with just real estate ads - rental and sales - which you can pick up at real estate agents and elsewhere. One of them is called Don Anuncio.

Round about a street called the Alameda Principal, right in the centre of M?laga, where all the bus stops and flower stalls are, you’ll find agents offering rentals, but you might get better deals at agents just outside the city centre. Try a street called Los Tilos, near the bus station for long distance buses, close to the main train station.

Hi guys, glad to see there are others going through the same process as I will too be moving to Malaga in about 10 days, I’ve never been to the city/region although I’ve spent some time in Barcelona and speak basic Spanish. Not sure where to start exactly but if you happen to check this thread please let me know how it’s going for you and, yes, I might have a couple of other questions since I know practically nothing about the place, cheers.

Hi Daniel,

I usually receive emails notifying me when there are new posts on this thread, but I didn’t this time and I wouldn’t have looked if you hadn’t contacted me through my Miami blog.

As I said in my blog, I’m leaving Miami for M?laga tomorrow, but I’ll be jet-lagged on Monday and for a day or two after, and I need to do things like file a tax return and go to the dentist, because I only go to dentists in Miami for real emergencies because of the scandalous amounts that they charge here.

When are you arriving in M?laga and what information do you need?

I’ll send you a private message with my contact details, but we don’t have phone or Internet at home in Spain, as we’re only there in the summer.
