I have to renew my Residencia Comunitario and would like confirmation of the reference number for the application form. I had a quick look on Google and got a bit confused as the information is either out of date or conflicting.

What is the current reference for an application form for a Brit to renew their Residencia. Various modelos are available on line, but before I start filling in the wrong one I just want confirmation.

Many thanks,

Michael. Malaga.

Hello Donkeyoatay.

May I suggest the quickest and easiest route. Just go to your relevant national police station (early as depending where you live they may give out x amount of numbers) Take with you your old permit and to be on the safe side a copy of the first and photo page of your passport and a enpadronamiento that is less than three months old. I am giving you a list of all documents that you would need if you were not a resident as we know civil servants like lots of paperwork. You can pick up your form whilst at the stationa and fill it in with the person who will attend you. Hope this was of assistance.

Thank you Myra for your input. I only need confirmation if I need modelo EX16 or EX18 to renew my residencia, nothing more. During the 40 odd years I have lived here I have done it countless times. The reason I need this confirmation is that it is impossible to speak with a human being at the nearest National Police station as all calls refer you automatically to their web site. As I have already said, if you do a Google search for “residencia renewal” you get conflicting answers. Some say EX16 and others say EX18.

If I lived near the police I could just pop in and get the form. However as I live 45 mins drive away I am asking here.

Thanks again,

Michael.

Even the governments own websites cant decide which is the correct form….

One says EX-16 another EX-18.

All indications seem to point to a rule change from earlier this year which replaces Form EX-16 with the EX-18.

Found this at http://www.theentertaineronline.com/news.php?item.1707.4

Residencia Renewal (Changes)

Thursday 01 September 2011 - 05:42:28
Recent changes to the Residencia renewal procedure have resulted in predictable minor confusions. The changes, although small, are important. Firstly the form, the EX 16 has been upgraded to an EX 18. Even though they look similar ? and even if you were given an EX 16 at the police station when you made your appointment ? it is no longer accepted. You can pick up the new version at any National Police Station or download it from the internet site:
here. (fb note; Broken link; it looks like the relevant website is being updated at this time. 22/9/11)
Secondly the fee or tasa, has increased by 20 cents to ?10.20. The ?10.20 ?has to be paid at a bank. Again, even if the form you were given (Mod 790) says only to pay ?10 Euros and you have already paid it, you still have to pay the 20 cents difference. No matter how annoying it is, the 20 cents has to be paid at the bank ? the police station unfortunately cannot accept the 20 cents in cash.
The rest is pretty much the same as before. Anyone who is in Spain for more than three months is obliged by Spanish law to register themselves on the central register of foreigners. This can be done at the National Police Station or Foreigners Office for your area.
Pass by the National Police Station in Almer?a City, make an appointment and collect the necessary paper work, application form EX 18 and payment form Modulo 790. Pay the fee at any bank on the day of your appointment or the day before. Bring the following; the filled-out EX 18 form and a copy, your receipt from the bank, your passport or national identity card and a photocopy of the same.
If it is a renewal you need to also bring the document or card that is to be renewed.
No photographs or other paper work is required. You will be issued with your new certificate of residency or Residencia there and then and asked to check it. This does not make you a resident as you are a European citizen and free to come and go. Only non-Europeans are lucky enough to hold ‘residence cards’.
The certificate is valid indefinitely and will not need renewing unless there is a change to your personal details. It shows your full name and address, your place and date of birth, your parents’ given names and your NIE number. It carries no photograph and is not valid for identification purposes, although you may on occasion be asked to show it.

Hope this helps.

Foxbat. Thank you so much for confirming this. It has saved me a wasted journey and a lot of time. I am going to present the EX-18 next week in Malaga city, so I will report back how I got on. Having read the link you supplied, I am more convinced than ever that a “Residencia” for Brits in Spain is not required under EU regs. If the new form can not be used for identification purposes what use is it.

BTW. I have just renewed my Spanish driving license and this process has improved. My private health centro did it all for me all for ?31:00 and no more visits to Trafico either.

Hello donkeyoakay.

Sorry to not have seen your response earlier but you received the information relating to the new Residencia application form modelo EX18 from foxbat with other useful information. Yes surprise, surprise the official site is down. Here is a link for a copy of the modelo if you have not downloaded one as yet.

I said I would let you know how I got on with my renewal. I decided to do it in Fuengirola rather than Malaga, basically because of the parking.

I started the process by downloading the EX18 form and then contacted the foreigners dept by telephone to ask if I needed an appointment. I was put through to a volunteer Brit called Aubrey who apparently helps the National Police with the basics. He gave me a appointment for mid November to present my papers and asked me to call by before and pick up the form Modulo 790 in order for me to pay the tasa. He also confirmed that I would need a photo copy of my passport and old residence card.

As I had to visit Fuengirola the next day I passed by the police station to get the Modulo 790. I only waited a few minutes to see Aubrey who gave me the form and checked my papers. Apparently the police only process 35 applications daily. As I had driven 20 kms to get this form Aubrey spoke with the official handling the applications and I was in luck. If I went straight to the bank and paid the ?uros 10.20 I would be processed as n? 36. When I returned from the bank I waited 10-15 mins and my papers were then processed and I was issued with the green registration paper.

For me, the whole process was quick, efficient and stress free. The only advice I would give anyone planning to renew their residencia, based on what I saw during my visit to the station would be, make sure you have the EX18 filled out correctly, you have your original residence card and passport available and in my case, I made sure I had a couple of photocopies of anything that might have been needed. 50% of what I had was returned, but at least I had them. I saw quite a few foreigners being turned away because they had not come prepared. If you don’t speak Spanish it might be a good idea to take someone with you who does, just in case.

Surely the other relevant point to make on this thread is that you only need to renew if you still hold the old card type so that you then have then new(ish) green form type.

Once you have that it never needs renewing. (At least if you are an EU citizen, can’t speak for Non EU)

Correct?

(Mind you I hear they, can’t remember which province, are trialling the re-introduction of a card for extranjeros so it could all change again)
