Just been through the (expensive) process, if you need too as well suggest you start here
http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/how-to-apply/spain

I used a local courier company to get the papers to Madrid which also checked the forms (they found a small problem, so it was worth their fee, as it saved having it rejected in Madrid)

The new passport has a chip and so can be used in machines at airports which might save queuing at border control.

The new one arrived in around 3-4 weeks, but guess it is their quiet time now.

Just got mine back today…two weeks after I left forms with local courier company! It’s a shame the price is so high especially as the new passports are now produced and sent out from the UK. Since expats pay extra for the courier return, you’d think the passport should now cost the same as someone living in the UK.

I agree as the renewer pays the courier there is no need for the renewal price to be higher than it is in the U.K. Had to get mine done a while back when it was done in Spain and I got it back in 8 days, now that is quick!!

So if the UK had a government issued ID card we could travel around Europe on that and pay less. (like the Spanish, who also pay less for their passports)

Are you in the Torrevieja area? Because I think this sevice is localised - they have shops signed up as agents, costs about 15? (inc courier to Madrid)

Look around your area and in your papers, there seems to be people offering this service in most areas.
