Government wants talks with Socialists on reorganized regional model.
The Popular Party government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has asked the main opposition Socialist Party for dialogue on a number of measures it has introduced before any of the issues are taken to the Constitutional Court, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya S?enz de Santamar?a said Friday.
S?enz de Santamar?a was speaking after Patxi L?pez, the Socialist premier of the Basque Country, on Friday said he planned to appeal decrees issued by the PP ordering cuts of 10 billion euros of spending on education and health on the grounds that they infringe the powers invested in the region in those two areas.
The Socialist-controlled region of Andalusia, as well as Catalonia and the Canary Islands, which are not controlled by the PP, have also raised legal objectives to the decrees. Andalusia is opposed to a drastic labor reform that was approved by the PP, and is currently going through Congress.
?I ask for dialogue,? S?enz de Santamar?a told reporters after the regular Friday Cabinet meeting. ?We have to reorganize our regional system in order to make it more efficient.?
Ever the cynic I have to ask, Isn’t this the sort of thing they do in the UK with the Boundaries Commission? Shift the goalposts? Remove the rights of constitutionally approved local and regional governments to set their own programme.
The PP claim that they had no idea just how bad things had got under Zapatero and the PSOE; what a crock of sh*t. In opposition the PP had from 2004 to see the way things were going and from 2007 when the International Banking Crisis sh*t hit the fan, to do something about it. I think its called the ostrich syndrome, lets all bury our heads in the sand til this lot blows over… in the meantime we’ll build a few more totally unnecessary airports…turn Valencia into a 22nd century city of the future… build yet another Grand Prix circuit, all of these things approved of and guaranteed by the PP.
The PP are going about this completely the wrong way, you dont stimualte growth by trampling all over the workforce, strangling the Health Service, and Education. They are doing exactly the same as the Tories in the UK. These policies ultimately will kill Spain and will certainly lead to the downfall of the PP, as has been reflected in the recent council elections in the UK where the Tories and LibDems have taken a hammering.
Two party politics will never ever provide an adequate solution. It always turns out to be a p*ssing contest…
I’ll get my coat…
