Well Spanish secondhand cars are expensive… aren’t they? Unbelievable - OK they don’t rust and they look well cared for… but really.

Does anybody understand this? If you look on the autoenred.es website they tell you the price of the car your looking for based on previous sales… cuckoo land, fairy tales, porky pies - I don’t know!

Call me a trendy poseur but looking at Jeep Wranglers they are advertised at two or three times over what autoenred qoute: Land Rover Defenders, call me a Gentleman Farmer poseur are about two or three thousand over and as a last resort I took the simple option of looking at Suzuki Jimnys which are about a thousand over…

No really, what is going on?

You can’t import a UK car because you’d have to take it back every year for an MOT… a bit stunned! I expect you’ll tell me that… ‘yes, they try and get away with it - just haggle!... start at about 10% of the value and you’ll get it for half the price’...

Go on tell me that’s true… please?

Tim
... off to my bank manager but I expect he already knows I’m going to have to buy a car   😊

Firstly… Why are you using a web holding page as a reference guide for anything?

For an accurate guide to prices I would suggest using http://www.coches.net

Sorry, but if you want a poseur type vehicle you should be prepared to pay poseur prices, that holds true no matter what the country.

Also be prepared to pay poseur insurance premiums too and remember that generally no-claims discounts are not transferable between countries.

You can?t import a UK car because you?d have to take it back every year for an MOT? a bit stunned!

Do your research; this has been covered time and time again on this and other expat forums.

YES you can import a UK car into Spain but you must transfer it onto Spanish plates if it remains it this country for more than six months and, unless you have owned the vehicle in the UK for more than six months you will be liable to Import tax. The use of a UK reg vehicle over here is officially restricted to six months in any one year and during that period the vehicle must be street legal in its country of origin, ie., in possession of a valid road tax certificate and a current UK road tax disc and valid insurance..
In order to transfer the vehicle to Spanish plates the vehicle must be presented at an ITV centre set up for homulgation work not all ITV stations are so equipped. You will need a Certificate of Conformance from the UK’s main vehicle distribution centre. There are companies over here that specialise in re-registeration and you would do well to seek their advice.

Do not be tempted to buy a Spanish reg vehicle in the UK… even if the documentation looks good. Any fines or liens on the vehicle will be transferred to you as the new owner and there is no sure way of establishing whether these exist prior to purchase.

Tim…

Completely disregarding your response… but… yes cars are more expensive over here principally because their life expectancy is at least twice or three times that in the UK. We have pristine condition 40 year old Citroen Amis and Renault 4’s and 6’s running around in our vicinity. There are bargains to be had but you need to shop around and in the current economic situation, people who would normally trade-in every two or three years are either holding onto their vehicles for longer or in the case of a two or three car family off loading one to raise capital.

Ive looked at your other post on the matter of car purchase; there really is no need to use an abogado to handle vehicle transfer bureaucracy. You, as the buyer should expect the dealer to handle the paperwork and do all the running around. If they won’t do it, turn around and walk away. like most businesses at the moment they will do almost anything to get a sale. Most self respecting dealerships will not allow the vehicle off the forecourt until the transfer is complete; they have the contacts and know the procedures involved. Any incidental costs are normally included in the purchase price.

Thanks fb
Appreciate that…

I would only use a gestor or abogado if it was a private sale and the cars I’ve spotted in C?diz and M?laga are private sales so there may be no way around that

All the best
