The costs of living is a question which comes up frequently ? these figures where printed recently in Spain by a local British newspaper ?

The comparison is 20 everyday items bought in the big Spanish supermarkets against the same items bought in the big UK supermarkets

Price in Spain: 57.61 euros

Price in UK: 79.53 euros

Difference: around 38% less in Spain

Figures. I tend to say that most things cost in pounds in the UK what we pay in euros here.
That doesn’t go fo everything of course.

Yes I would tend to agree with that on my infrequent trips to the UK the numbers are about the same but of course around 30% different in value terms.

Has anyone seen a more comprehensive comparison?  I would like to see figures for a year for say a couple or a small family,  and not product for product. After all my life in spain is very different from my life in the UK.  I for example eat far more fresh food in Spain, more vegetarian food which tends to be cheaper, and no butter.  On gas and electricity I use less.  Spanish transport is negligible (to the nearest city 1.7 Es return - in the UK from my village to Basingstoke [less distance] ?4.30. - In Spain no need for a car, I’ll just hire when needed).

The counter:  In Spain I eat out more

Taxes for the house are comparable but for me in Spain are less than the council tax and other expenses in the UK.

I am planning when I can jack it all in and pitch in Spain permanently but the problem is to do it too soon without everything covered would be a disaster.  But equally I remember my parents struggled on working only to find when they retired that their outgoings (and I’m talking UK) dropped considerably.  They could have quit 3 years earlier.

And hell I’m never going to crack playing flamenco guitar here in the UK - nearest teacher 35 miles and ?30 per hour - in Spain down the road and costs Es 20 per hour.

ps I think that should be 28% less in Spain or 38% more in the UK - but only have O-level Maths.  On a rough comparison of all my expenses I calculate I get a nearer 50% saving.
