hi:

i’m an indian citizen and my spanish gf and i are planning to get married.  i’m planning to travel to spain for this purpose…from what i hear spain doesnt have any “fiance visa” or something similar.  from my past experiences i know that it’s always a pain in the a** for an indian citizen to obtain a tourist visa to travel to EU.  couple of questions.  firstly can i go on a tourist visa and get married and make it legal?  secondly does it help if i mention that i’m planning to get married in spain while i apply for a visitor visa?

one thing though, i’m not looking for this trip to stay back as a resident…for now it will be just a visit for marriage and i can work towards residency in spain in the future, depending on what we decide on where we wanna live.

any help is appreciated guys!

ciao!

Hi Odaku,

The only thing I know of related to staying in Spain for marriage is the prorroga (extended stay). However, you would only need that if you plan to be in Spain longer than what your tourist visa would allow you (90 days, I assume?). If that’s your case, you would need to apply for the prorroga at the police station soon after you arrive and show proof of your plans to marry in Spain on a set date that is past your original visa allowance. You can get up to an extra 90 days on your visa with a prorroga or in some cases 180 days more.

Good luck!

thanks fropie and babita!

sorry i didnt respond earlier…thanks for your input and i really appreciate it.
looks like there is no easy or painless way whenit comes to marrying a spanish citizen…but having dealt with indian bureaucracy, i’m kinda prepared 😊...looks like i might need a “bachelorship certificate” from india and i’m sure that’s gonna be an adventure!

cheers!

We got married last year, but had both been here for over 2 years and had padrons to prove that, both being English it wasn’t the nightmare that people say, but then we’re both in the EU and neither had been married before.
One thing I would recommend is talking to the townhall in the town where you plan to marry, and asking them what you need as each area seems different.

I wish you luck.
