Is La Caixa (La Caja de Ahorros y Pensiones de Barcelona) a public company and if so what is its ticker symbol, which Spanish exchange is it listed on and where can I find share prices?

Also, how sound is it compared with other banks?  I have about ?30,000 on deposit with La Caixa and I believe this is above the amount guaranteed by the government.

La Caixa functions superbly as a bank, but why can’t I find information? Is the reason that it’s a charitable trust with stocks not available to the public?

Also, what shape are Spanish banks in generally? I haven’t heard any scare stories about Spanish banks ? not yet. Is it a question of no news is good news?

Although I normally live in M?laga (capital) I’m living in Miami at present.

Thanks for the info. I’ll take a look at the link you suggested.

My wife and I have separate accounts with La Caixa, but neither has a balance of more than ?100,000, so what you’ve told me has reassured me.

Where can I find details of the new government guarantee level (in Spanish or English)? The problem is that we’re in Miami, so we’re not reading Spanish newspapers. Maybe I should start looking at El Pa?s online.

We have accounts with two banks in the USA which looked a little shaky for a while - Washington Mutual and Wachovia - but their problems seem to have been resolved by takeovers.
