Income Tax Query - Aussie Considering Retiring in Spain

Hi Guys,

There is a double taxation treaty between Spain & Australia. My query is twofold:

1) Are there any circumstances whereby the Spanish taxation authorities could independently access/verify our assets & income from Australia ?

2) What is the probability of such assertive measures being taken ie how assertive are the Spanish tax people ?

The above queries are based on premise that we would diligently complete Spanish annual tax returns & submit reasonable declarations.

Also, I appreciate there is a rigid taxation treaty among EU countries including sharing of data between jurisdictions. However, I have no practical experience about the arrangements with Australia.

Hopefully, some people may be able to assist or point us in right direction for advice.

Cheers,

Andrea
