Work Permit Student Visa for English Teacher

Hola,

I am interested in doing the TEFL-in-Spain course in Granada. I was told that, upon completion of my course, I would get a job offer, and with that job offer, would be able to obtain a work permit. I have heard from some people that I can only apply for a work permit in Spain in the US (being an American), which would mean I would have to make a trip home (a huge pain). However the representative with whom I spoke said that it would also be possible to apply for the permit at the American consulate in Spain. I know I'm not the first person to have had this idea, so I am wondering if anybody had any experience in this area, and could attest to whether or not it is indeed possible to apply for the permit/visa at the American Consulate in Spain. Might be an idea ot contact the American Consulate in Spain directly and ask them.

From the website of the U.S. Embassy in Spain: "American citizens wanting to study, reside, or work in Spain must obtain the appropriate visa from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their state/country of last residence. After the visa has been issued, foreigners have three months to apply for the corresponding permit with the Spanish authorities in Spain. Obtaining a residence or work permit is a complicated process; since regulations change continually, we suggest that you check the Ministry of Interior?s website, or call the Ministry of Interior, within Spain, toll-free at 060. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also manages a website."
