I’ve searched the forums but can’t find anything, apologies if this as been done before.

We have a small craft with an outboard engine, how easy is it to just put it in the sea and amble around the coastlline a bit? (Not too close to swimmers obviously) Anyone ever done this who can give me a few pointers?

It might be an idea to check at your nearest marina.  I am sure the marina office or indeed anyone there would give you some idea of the rules.
