Scooter laws in Spain (50cc)

I was to get a scooter, and would love to avoid the hell of having to pass the Spanish driving test.

I've been told that pretty much anybody can ride a scooter as long as it's below 50cc. I was told that all you need is a helmet.

I'm an EU citizen, but only have a US drivers license.

Does anybody know what the actual law about 50cc scooters is?

I've been looking but haven't found anything.

Thanks.

Hi,
Don't know the law with regard to US driving licence. If you have a 'full' UK car licence you can ride a bike up to 125cc in Spain. It was 50cc but the law changed about two years ago. I would have thought the same applied for a US licence. I would just ask in any of the larger bike retailers...they're usually very helpful.
