Hi
We moved in May this year and we brought our puppy with us. My vet sorted everything out as he was registered to issue the pet passports. Not all vets are. It’s was rather a simple procedure and the flight with Monarch was straight forward too.
hi, i hope you dont mind me asking but how much did it cost to bring your dog over to spain i already have a pet passport just need to get the carrier.
many thanks sam .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
It cost ?365 for the flight with monarch airlines. This included a pet box which was ?60 so if you have your own then you can save this. The cost did depend on the type of dog though, mine is a llasa apso which is fairly small. I did look into the companies that specialise in transporting animals but I would have been looking at over ?1,000. I had to drop my dog off about 2 hours before the flight then when I arrived in Malaga I went straight to the cargo terminal. I was rather worried about her through the flight but to be honest she was absolutely fine, no problems what so ever.
My husband did moan re the cost though, mind you he would as it only cost ?12.99 for him and our four girls the day before. I travelled the following day with a different airline…...
If you go onto Monarch airlines then they have a special no for you to ring and they are really helpful and put your mind at rest with regards to your pet being well looked after.
Hope this info is of some use. Let me know how you get on
I am also taking my dog to Spain when I called Monarch I found them very rude and not very helpful at all. I have now got her booked in with British Airways who I found very helpful. She will travel on the same flight as me and is charged as excess baggage which costs ?4.50 per kilo plus ?20 handling fee and obviously the crate as well I have worked this out as costing about ?180 all in for the flight and crate for her. She is a collie cross whippet so she is the size of a border collie but the build of a whippet. The only problem being is I’m in Glasgow and my flight flys out of Gatwick so I will need to get the train there but that costs nothing for the dog, you still can’t fly dogs out of Glasgow.
hi SHERRYL and LISA24, thanks for the information you have provided. wow ?360 i dont understand how they can charge that much , thats like paying for two adults and you dont even get a seat and stuck under the plane! , i will give both airlines a call see what they say. she is only a toy poodle and is about 5kg, the worst thing i think is that we are already here so she will have to be taken by my daughter to the airport and i will meet her this end i just hope that she will be ok cuz i will only travel via plane if i have to.
thanks again to you both sam
Sorry to hear that they were rude. I can honestly say they were more than helpful.. I also looked at flying with British Airways but with the cost of my flight it worked out ?200 dearer for me and the dog to what I paid with Monarch as I got a really cheap flight for me with monarch so all in all I know it sounds dearer but it did work out cheaper. THe thing is to ring around as obviously prices really do vary… I would check wether or not the dog can fly without you being on the plane.. I wouldn’t have thought it would matter but it is one question to ask…. Good luck, let me know how you get on..
Hi
MY flights with BA were only ?35.50 so it worked out cheaper for me as well because Monarch were working out at ?69. I think it depends what time of year you go and how far in advance you book, plus I have the problem that I sound really young so people tend to think I am and therefore don’t know what I’m talking about I’ve had it alot on the phone with people asking to speak to the person in charge of the house and when I say it’s me they don’t believe me. I’m happy with the service I got from BA the guy I spoke to was really helpful although I went through to the wrong department he gave me all the information I would need and told me if I was on the same flight to book mine first as the needed my reference number to book her in for me it’s alot easier for her to come on the same flight as me as I have to travel to London anyway and the pet courier companies were looking to cost about 6 times what I have had to pay.
Hi
It is amazing how they all can charge such different prices isn’t it. The main thing is that our pets got here safe and sound. Don’t know about you but I was more concerned about my puppy flying than my husband and kids, won’t tell him that though..
I was given the same info re booking my flight first which is why I am not sure if they allow dogs to travel on their own.
Nice speaking to you….
Sherryl
It’s good to hear all animals arrived safely, by whichever airline. I have 2 border collie dogs that I transported over and phoned both BA & Monarch, plus others, and have to say I found them all very helpful if a tad expensive. In the end I came by car through France then into Spain. It did take 5 days but there really some good pet friendly hotels en-route, especially in France. But flying down is done in dusted in a day so has it’s advantages but my dogs seemed to be happy with being driven and going on a different walk everyday, not to mention the fuss they had made of them!! Overall the process of obtaining a passport for them couldn’t have been easier but it does help when you a very knowledgeable vet but then again, it’s probably an everyday occurance now!!!
I brought my dog over a couple of weeks ago and we came by ferry to Santander. He had his own kennel, I could visit him any time of day or night and walk him and play with him and it only cost ?20

To anyone coming out here with a dog that doesn’t realise, when you get out here, its 2 things you should be very aware of….
1. Its about time to get a Scalibor collar for your dog, this will help protect against Leishmania which is transmitted by the sand flies which are in season from about now until the end of Sept/oct. The collars are supposed to last for 6 months but if you speak to a vet they usually recommend changing after about 4.5 or 5 months. Lots of dogs out here have the disease, which comes in 2 forms, internal and external, our dog got it externally and is ok now, had 20 injections one a day, and is on tablets for the rest of its life. Our friends dog got it internally and died 3 weeks later after many visits to the vet and staying in for a week. You cannot prevent it totally, but you can help guard against it.
More info here: http://www.leishmaniasis.info/
2. Watch out for Processional caterpillars, which are just coming to the end of their season now… http://www.thinkspain.com/news/noticia.asp?CodNoticia=2367
If you pet licks or eats them then its serious problems… anaphalactic shock being the result as the spines on the caterpillars are highly dangerous, to humans as well. DON’T stamp on them, leave well alone if possible, or contact your local town hall to remove the nests when they start to appear.
