Telefonica installed an ADSL line into our new offices a year ago which has been problem free up until a couple of weeks ago. You can be online everything fine and then you want to go the next page of a site or another site (ie like the BBC which is always online right!) and it comes back and says Page cannot be found. Yes the site address is correct (they are coming from bookmarks list) After about 10mins it then works again. The lights on the router are normal and the telephone line continues to work.

Any ideas because Telefonica havent!

Hmm, could be a proxy issue. Can you check your browser’s options for any proxy servers and delete them?

Are you using Firefox or IE (I hope Firefox…).

What about firewalls? Try disabling your firewall (some of them will automatically cut off your connection for a period of time if they detect an attempted intrusion - if you were on a Mac this wouldn’t be an issue 😉 ).

I used to get the odd problem like this or “Page Cannot Be Found”, etc…

I use Mozilla Firefox now and have far less problems, so might be worth downloading it and see if this helps.

I remember seeing this a couple of years ago.  The problem was caused by Telef?nica using a proxy for port 80 traffic and not telling anyone.  It would be interesting to know if you only see this with traffic on port 80.

Thanks guys - yes we use Mozilla - latest version. Although I consider myself to be pretty computer literate after the Mozilla question I was lost. I looked at Mozillas Tools/Options and then searched in their help and saw nothing about Proxy Servers. ???

I checked Don Carlos?s link to Telefonica and I understand the drift but need Julia?s native Spanish on this one and then I will get her to phone them again and she can have a technical discussion!

I also take the firewall comments on board (I understood that bit!) because we have just upgraded our software now running Bit Defender which does seem pretty over zealous!

The ironic thing was I was just going to post about this problem yesterday and it happened!! then it came back again later.

OK guys - I am catching up!

Found the Mozilla setting (tools, options connection settings…....) and we have the direct connection option.

I think our new firewall software is stopping access when we end up a Proxy server. Telefonica are as always being very vague and non commital! Bless them!

In the course of this I learned more about IP addresses - frightening! If only people knew…......

IP addresses? Oh do tell! Did you hear about IPv6? It should be hitting the mainstream over the next few years and will hopefully rectify many of the problems with IPv4 (currently in use).

Yeah, those firewalls are OFTEN the cause of connection problems. See, I bought a Mac, so now I never have these issues (can you tell I’m evangelizing?).
