Health care options for a Brit living here but as non-resident

I live in Granada but i’m self employed in the UK working from here because, well, why not? So, I don’t want to be a resident particularly, I don’t want to be autonomo, it’s just paper work for no real reason. My only real concern is health. I’m 27 and healthy but want to be prepared for any unforeseeable problems where I need to be treated here.

My question is, how much does my NHS european health care card cover me for? Should I be taking out some kind of insurance? Ideally I’d like to go to a Spanish dentist here, is it best to pay per visit or try to find insurance that covers that? Does anyone know a good dentist in Granada (regardless of nationality - Spanish, English or other…)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! 😊

Why not ? If you live here you are resident after six months whether you like it or not and should declare your income in the UK on a Spanish tax return.
Are you on the padron ? Do you have an NIE and Spanish car ?
If you were autonomo here you would pay into the system and get free health care.
Your card only entitles you to emergency care.
Dentists are private so you just pay them.

Thanks for the reply.

I have no car. My bank account is done with my passport. I got a extranjero number from the police station (registered to a previous address now) just in case I needed it for anything. I pay my rent in cash every month. Nothing is tying me to Spain.

I chose to work as UK self employed on the basis I pay ?8 national insurance/month, not circa 250 euro/month social security for healthcare I never use and a pension I’m likely to never collect here. Also because 90% of my clients are English in England. I don’t take anything from the state here, so I can’t feel bad for Spain, I just spend here!

Are you definite that my health card is only emergencies? If I get private insurance I should just go to Dr’s when needed then claim it? And of course if something bad and unexpected should happen then go to hospital and again, claim later?

Many thanks again for answering…

P.S. What is the Padron?
