Will I have trouble with the tax authorities?

Hello…

I moved to Spain a few months ago as a UK citizen and recently got a job teaching English. I have an account with La Caixa. They want to pay me under the table. While it is too bad that this is not legal, I am not sure what to do. I am, however, quite concerned about the Spanish tax authorities. The amount is about 2000 Euros a month. Should I be concerned or will this not catch up to me? Thanks for any help.

Loads of people, Spanish and foreign, do it and get away with it.  Depends how long you’re going to be in Spain etc.  It might be more sensible to become autonomo (self-employed), then you can pay tax but claim every possible deduction and underestimation so that you reduce it to a legal minimum.

Hola

I personally would take it if you feel the need to right now but I wouldn’t bank too much of it, leaving a trace of money in banks when you are trying to conceal it could, or rather, has more possibilities of catching up with you in the end

If you are not here for long then don’t worry yourself too much and if you do worry about it then you can declare earnings in your home country and pay tax there

I worked for cash years ago in a nightclub that was never declared but we were not talking ?2000 a month either 😉
