i am new to the forum and will be making my move in September—just finished up my visa today 😉 With most of those types of technicalities almost out of the way - I have a day-to-day question for the ladies—how does birth control work in Spain? I will have health insurance when I arrive, however, I dont want to use what I am using now, in case it is not available in Spain and I do not know as of now who my OB will be. I dont want to just too a hasty switch - so any info or insight would be much much appreciated!
thanks for all the insight (and quite colorful suggestions 😉 ). I was mainly asking because I heard/read somewhere in the depths of the internet that you do not need a prescription—you basically just go to the farmacia and ask for what you want and they give it to you and this threw me off a tad—- soo I figured I would ask the expat experts!
p.s. i am not planning on arriving and posting up shop on the most trafficked street corner (not that i judge others actions however, i am in a long-term committed relationship) and just wanted to continue not worrying about over-populating the earth before i am mentally prepared to do so B)
Hi,
Given that ‘The Pill’ and HRT are very closely related, I should think that if you go into your local pharmacia with the packaging of your current choice of pill they will supply the Spanish equivalent without a prescription; this is certainly the case with HRT, both of which require a prescription in the UK. You will probably find that they are also a lot cheaper in Spain.
You should also note that generally speaking the most popular antibiotics can be similarly purchased without prescription.
Strangely though, painkillers containing Codeine which used to be available freely now DO require a prescription.
Hope this helps

Hi, In my experience I was given the birth control pill in the pharmacy. I took in the box from the packet I had been using in the UK and they were able to look at the ingredients and give me a Spanish version, exactly like the one I had always used. Should you get a difficult pharmacist who won?t do it, just try another one!! Failing that, if you have health insurance just go and see a gynocologist who will be able to give you a prescription. Don?t think you?ll have a problem though if you take along your current pill.
They recently released a new contraceptive pill that is a “ring” that sits, ahem, up there and time releases hormones (my recollection may be off). Side effect: two cup sizes up! At least for my friend…
My OH who is a Spaniard has to pay for the Pill, thats in the Junta De Andulucia area, it may differ from region to region.
She stopped takin it a few times as I was disconnected from active service a few years ago, luckily though they didn`t use two rocks and a whiskey.
She continues now as her time of the month makes her more crazy than usual and the pill mellows that a bit, not as much as I`d like, but at least its not as bad.
Since we all seem to be great friends in here…. I actually use the ring - that is why I was quite curious because I didn?t know how popular it was outside of the US. I would recommend it to anyone - once a month and barely any side effects. reat to know its out there !
