there lot off Pros and Cons on this one , MAC , down two the line its a Rock with lot off water around it , why Gibraltar and Spain dont get on
like school kids in payground , now i know why we pay them .

Histroy .... The British period

During the War of the Spanish Succession, British and Dutch troops, allies of Archduke Charles, the Austrian pretender to the Spanish Crown, formed a joint fleet and attacked various towns on the southern coast of Spain. On 4 August 1704, after six hours of bombardment starting at 5:00 am, the fleet, under the command of Admiral Sir George Rooke, assisted by Field Marshal Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt, comprising some 1800 Dutch and British marines, captured the town of Gibraltar and claimed it in the name of the Archduke Charles. Terms of surrender were agreed upon, after which most of the population chose to leave Gibraltar peacefully.

The British military traditionally dominated the economy of Gibraltar, with the naval dockyard providing the bulk of economic activity. This has however diminished in the last twenty years, and it is estimated to account for only 7% of the local economy, compared to over 60% in 1984. Today, Gibraltar has an extensive service-based economy, dominated by financial services (this to end for bookies in 2010 ) and tourism. Recently, many bookmakers and online gaming operators have relocated to Gibraltar to benefit from operating in a regulated jurisdiction with a favourable corporate tax regime. However, this corporate tax regime for non-resident controlled companies is due to be phased out by 2010 . The Rock is a popular tourist attraction, particularly among British tourists and residents in the southern coast of Spain. It is also a popular shopping destination, and all goods and services are VAT free. Many of the large British high street chains have branches or franchises in Gibraltar including Marks & Spencer, Bhs, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Adams, Mothercare, Early Learning Centre, Monsoon, Next, Peacocks and the supermarket Morrisons. Branches and franchises of international retailers such as Tommy Hilfiger and Sunglass Hut are also present in Gibraltar, as is the Spanish clothing company Mango.

Spain makes lot on tolls from motorway to and from the rock , E-15 .

The Spanish can have Gibraltar if they give Spanish territory back to Morroco.

its a tough question for a non gibraltarian to answer….......

personally i love the place although , and it might sound weird, i’m not sure why? Maybe the naval thing reminds me of Plymouth, but i’m leaving Plymouth to live in spain, so not sure! Gib is an interesting place and yes i wish the Spanish and the english would just sort it out once and for all.

I think they (the spanish) are hypocrites really. Melila and cueta are land stolen from the moroccans but they are too weak to fight and get it back off spain. Spain is a large and diverse country so why they are interested in a TINY bit of land is beyond me.

The mujer has lived there before, years ago, and says it can be claustrophobic, especially when the sh*** starts up from time to time at the border. I wish they would just sort it out.

La Linea is a total dump and would be nothing without the rock, but the inhabitants still fire paint guns at gib road signs, or remove them completely. i mean how petty, do they not have better things to do?

I’m not sure what the answer s but i wish they would just blimmin sort it out with each other. I read the Spanish foreign minister or something is going to visit, which is a big step, dont know what it will achieve though.

OK.

I`ll point out the mistake then.

We cannot vote to your question as you`ve asked two different questions that will contradict and confuse the results.

Are you asking

Either

Should Gibraltar be Part of Spain ?  No it shouldn`t.

Or

Stay the Independent From Spain ?  Yes it should.

You cannot ask and answer both answer both.

I`m reading 4 votes state Spain should not be handed back and one yes it should.

Or

4 votes stating no it shouldn`t stay independant of Spain and 1 Yes it should.

Confused.

Maybe worth closing this and starting up a fresh new one.

The boss may find it usefull, learning how to start all over again after makin a mistake.

I try to advise people as much as i can.

Some appreciate it others get pi88sy.

Time, luck, attitude, intelligence and the ability to integrate will decide your fate in Spain, declaring success pre move is not a good attitude to have, especially if your running away from something.
