I will shortly getting a UK registered car re-plated. Does anyone know thed sequence of procedure. As far as I am aware:

1 Headlights changed
2. ITV plus a charge for checking the UK registration document and transfer to Spanish equivalent
3. Padron?
4. Suma (car tax).

Anything else? Have I got it right? Cheers

Mike this is top of our list when we return in Sept (assuming our heap has not rusted into powder after 4 more weeks in UK rain), would be great if you could update this thread later and let us know how you get on / what it all costs (Euros and hassle…) - Thanks!

Yes, I am mostly doing this ‘independently’; with the help of a friend who can’t afford and doesn’t believe in shelling out to get someone else to do what he could do, with a little effort. Right, the first bit is done. The headlights were changed by Bosch in Torrevieja. A great job; ?271 supplied, tested, and fitted to to ITV standards.
The car is a Mondeo and surprisingly (for a Ford) was a little on the pricey side and problematic in the fitting. So your car’s headlights might well be cheaper. Bosch are the best. I am just waiting for a cash injection before I move to my pre-ITV and re-registration. Where will you be based, Maya?

I have not had to go through the process myself, and I know it depends on a lot of factors including engine size, emissions, value, how long you have been in the country etc but I think this process can be quite expensive even on a DIY basis. Mike has stated 271? just to change the headlights.

So I would think it must be worth considering - is it worth it?

ie say the process costs around 2,000 euros - then what would that buy?

It would buy an under 10 yrs old Mondeo (for example) plus sell the old car to recoup some of the investment.

Tricky problem, interesting that none of the companies who do it for you give a price range on their sites.

Though not an expert I have had a breadown of the costs, which come out far less than ?1,000. I asked a neighbour who had the lot done by a firm that specialises in re-plating. He said the total cost (he had a BMW) was just under ?1,000 - excluding I think, car insurance.
Worth it in my case because though the car is number-plate old a replacement of similar quality would cost at least ?5,000. The reason they don’t give a price is because each car is different. For instance they cannot predict ITV (MOT) problems or the cost of parts in advance.
Rule of the thumb: the headlights were the most expensive outlay. If it goes through the ITV that’ll be about ?75. No import tax as it is over 1- years old.
Re-plating: i.e transferring registration details about the same price, plus plates: not much. Then insurance. I am assured I can get good Third Party inc’ breakdown for about ?150. (road tax) Suma ?60. So theoretically ?650.
Suggests the companies that do it all for you make about ?300 - ?350 a car, plus commissions off say insurance agents, and discounts (headlights) and such like.
