They have done it for citizen’s of South American countries as well.
There’s a height requirement?!?! How old-fashioned! In the English version of the criteria you have men’s and women’s height mixed up. So, women have to be at least 1.6 and men must be 1.7 meters.
Its the Guardia, they should have been disbanded after Franco.
And its Spain.
If you go into there offices they still retain pictures of the King on there loyalty wall.
Also in 2007 a group of Guardia beat to death a guy outside there station, they all grouped together to deny it and basically they all got away with it.
Old fashioned values are top dog in there organisation, especially Mafia values.
I`d love to here from a Brit in the Guardia, that could be interesting.
My wife spoke to a friend yesterday in Jaen, there struggling for money so the wife has taken a job in a Nursing Home.
She left work yesterday at 7am and my OH rang at 10pm, she wasn`t home from work until 11pm. My OH rang and spoke to her, she was just in the middle of cookin dinner for herself and her husband.
The husband has a week of work.
She`s been workin for 15 hours and he couldn`t be arsed to cook a meal for her.
He`s in the Guardia Civil in Jaen.
He is a bully, were pretty convinced he beats her, but there is no evidence other than when we lived there she was always in a rush to cook before he came home.
Southern Spain and Spain in general still has a long way to go.
It was still illegal in 1980 for a married women to have an affair, it carried a prison term, for a man it was legal.
It was also legal for a man to punish a women, a slap was legally acceptable. This year a well known judge freed a husband who beat his wife on the grounds that certain measures should be acceptable to control a wife.
A married women needed her husbands permission to open a bank account upto 1980.
But.. seriously.. I think it says something about Spaniards that people are outraged about the voilence happening to women, that the government has taken on the issue, and that the media is reporting on it. Violence like this happens all over the world, and in truley backwards places, no one does anything to try and stop it. I think you are being a bit harsh on Spain.
Also, domestic violence stats in Spain are about on par with the rest of Europe! Maybe fewer Spanish women report their husbands.. but at the same time I think victims in any country are reluctant to report their own spouse to police..
It has only been in the last 2 yrs since anything of substance has materialised, such as shelters for women to live away from husbands.
Previously on very serious cases got any response and a small number resulted in Policia Local officers providing protection in the form of one bodyguard.
Also, domestic violence stats in Spain are about on par with the rest of Europe! Maybe fewer Spanish women report their husbands.. but at the same time I think victims in any country are reluctant to report their own spouse to police..
There a very few if any stats to compare country to country, you also have to take into account lots of factures.
But since were in a Spanish forum well keep to Spain, I never said there the worst country in Europe, i`m sure Romania is far worse.
But compare Spain to other similar countries such as the UK, France, Sweden,Norway etc you notice that there is more protection for women compared to Spain.
Anyway in 2003 womens right groups were complaining, read here.
If you read these National Stats from the Federacion de Associacion de Mujeres Seperadas y Divorciadas, scroll down to the dates and click each one for details of each murder and a total, you`ll note in 1999 46 women were murdered by there partners, whilst in 2008 69 were, 2006 there were 96 murders.
So whilst Zapatero`s govt is promoting womens rights and stating there protecting women, there not really reducing the figures of Murder, violence against women I no for a fact isn`t reported as much as other countries.
This one is of a women sued by her husband because of an affair she had under Moral Damages law she has had to pay 200,000.00 Euros in fines after her appeal.
The court dismissed evidence of the husbands affairs and uninterest in the family.
lol! I am enjoying the contributions to this post.
I have been told (many times!) when I go to do a denuncia at the Guardia by the interpretuer - ‘Don’t pressure them, they are lowly paid, trying to do their best’ etc, etc. Basically I was being warned not to ask too much (i.e the crime in hand to be pursued/looked into/anyone brought to book), plus I must grovel for what scraps of help I could obtain from them.
On the upside - when they have taken action (either in response to my own denuncias - or to the occasional one from the tourist I have been helping in my role as ‘good samaritan/job as a tourist rep’) - they have come to a burgled property and taken finger prints… But then no news!
The most help I ever got (on a good day obviously!) was the Tenniente (commander/lieutenant) of my local station make an advance call to Malaga Traffico in a difficult case I had regarding a car accident (in which the ‘Equipo de Atestados’ had totally missed me off their 14 page report - thus making my claim against the perpertrator/insurance co’s virtually impossible!)... where I was told which office to go to and whom to speak to. (I am pleased to report the Sargeant on duty did his level best to rectify the sitution and I finally got compensation - albeit small 😉
Guardia Traffico are always good in a crisis - i.e a major car smash on the many busy coastal roads…
~They sort it out, get people to hospital, damaged cars removed and get the traffic moving asap.
‘~But’ there is a lot more to it than that!
(NB I am ex HMForces/ RMP and was ‘asked’ to join the UK civilian police on discharge - but I refused (for very good reasons 😉...
To even think of ‘joining up’ here - NO, No, no no no!!!! 😉
Some UK Domestic Violence statistics: http://home.cybergrrl.com/dv/body.html
Between 1 and 2 women are killed by their partners every week in the UK. (That would, obviously, be 52 to 104 a year).
Obviously, this is relative to population.. (UK about 60 million, US about 300 million, Spain about 40 million)
but it just puts the Spain numbers into perspective a little bit..
On another note, did you know that the UK still had sodomy laws on the books until 1997??
Sexual acts between two adult males, with no other people present, were made legal in England and Wales in 1967, in Scotland in 1980 and Northern Ireland in 1982. But, after that, it was still illegal for anyone else to be in the room… it wasn’t until 1997 that “no other people present” was changed to “no minor persons present.”
Spain, on the other hand, abolished its sodomy laws in the early 1800s! And, in 2005, it became the first nation to eliminate all legal distinctions between same-sex and heterosexual unions, by legalizing gay marriage..
WB’s friends experience seems to be ‘par for the norm’...
Although homosexuality (gay & lesbian) was ‘de-crimilinized’ in Spain a long time ago… It was only as recent as the past 5 years (?) that gay couples could share/live in ‘married accommodation’ as same sex partner in Guardia.
I know my local Guardia barracks is in a ‘traditional pueblo’ and would be interested to know if any such couples co-habit there.
It seems that even tho on paper the Spanish are ‘modern’ - they lag behind in many respects.
However, there is always a conundrum - as the IVF laws in Spain are very different than the UK - Infact they are advertising (in Barcelona/Madrid) for same sex couples (f) to have one of their eggs firtilized and put in the other partner. A practice that is illegal in the UK…
etc, etc ...
Another ‘positive example’ was a friend who had to throw her violent partner out - and then had to call the local Guardia for help as she feared for her life… and they put her on priority call out - and got a restraining order on her behalf..
Can’t ask better than that 😉
(Downside… A male friend that had a ‘Latin lover’ - and all the temprement that goes with it - Was unjustly accused of beating her - when it was the other way round - But he ended up in clink - without a Q being asked!!!)...

UK stats are far more accurate than Spanish.
Try watching Gente and the news programmes for accurate info.
