Passports do get lost, stolen or accidently ruined. When replacing it the problem will get worse if you don’t have a photocopy of the essential picture page, upon which all tracing information is carried.
It will make it easier for everyone if you photocopy the picture page and keep the copy secure elsewhere; perhaps with another family member. Distance isn’t a problem as the detail or scanned copy can be e-mailed.
Likewise your credit/debit cards and other essential documents. Photocopying them is hassle free compared with figuring things out after the sad event. Good luck!
