Hi, I hope someone can help with some good sound advice!! I want to relocate to Spain with my husband and 3 boys. I have been looking at job vacancies on the internet but have not had any replies. Is it better to move out and then look, or take a trip out and try to secure something then? HELP

I am not trying to shatter your dreams but Spain has one of the highest unemployment levels in the EU at the moment.

I lived in Spain for 7 years and only managed to work for 2 of them, doing telesales for a timeshare company. These jobs are normally on a commission basis only, very hard work for little reward.
Why are you thinking of moving to Spain, the grass is not always greener think very hard first.

I don’t know what sort of work you are looking for, however it is my experience that if you can turn your hand to a variety of tasks then you will have no problem in finding some work.
That is my experience in this part of Spain Andalucia,Almeria, however you will not earn anywhere near as much as in the UK/Ireland,and the work is not regular.
Some weeks you will have to turn work away then you will go one or two months without any,not good if you need to work.

Not a good idea to move to Spain just like that and specially with 3 boys… I don’t know what ages they are but have you thought of:

- Language barrier…
- What area would you prefer to come to in Spain?
- How much is a home to rent or buy?
- What schools are your kids going to go to? Spanish, English school?

Find some information first about the different areas in Spain, You will find more English speaking people on the costas than inland, I don’t know what your financial issues are like but come on holiday first and have a look around and sort out essential issues first, make some friends and ask for their experience, there are many budget airlines, and you can probably rent something for a reasonable price and see if you will get offered a job.

But this is only my opinion and experience, I live here for 22 years, I have seen many families come and go, I was lucky to be introduced in to a Spanish school when I was a toddler, and I am very grateful for it, your business opportunities multiply if you know Spanish.

Hi Andrea, while it’s more likely that you will find a job once you arrive here, jobs are hard to find at the moment so you must be open to the possibility of having to return should the job not come!
There are other options too, depending on your current skills and training…
