Is it easier for Americans to find work with American companies in Barcelona?

Hello,

My boyfriend and I currently live in Prague.  We are considering a move to Barcelona, however we are very concerned about what work is available for Americans.  We are not interested in living paycheck to paycheck or teaching English.  Instead we are looking for steady long-term employment with the normal benefits.

My boyfriend has a background in finance and in teaching (he took a break from his career to teach English in Prague for 2 years).  He has about 5 years of experience working as an analyst for major US financial institutions.  He studied Spanish at University up to a high Intermediate level but is a bit rusty now.

I have 1.5 years of teaching experience.  Additionally, before my time in Prague I worked on the business end of fashion (production manager) for about 3 years.  I studied up to a high beginner level of Spanish at University but am also a bit rusty.

My questions are:

1.  What work is available for Americans apart from teaching English in Barcelona?  In other words, in which fields is an employer more likely to be able to justify hiring Americans (I know this is a necessary part of getting a visa)?

2.  Owing to the visa situation, is it easier to find work with American companies (I noticed HP for example was hiring in Barcelona)?  Is it easier for American companies to justify hiring Americans? Are there any loopholes that allow companies registered in the U.S. to hire Americans?

Any help would be most appreciated.  THANK YOU!

Hi there!

I’ve been living in Barcelona for the past few years. At the moment, the job situation is really tough and I’m a British Native. I’m lucky to have changed jobs a few months ago and get a permanent contract but it was through a recommendation. If you’re new to the city, it’s definately much more difficult to find work for various purpose such as language etc. If you’re going to come, I would try and get a job before you arrive but this is not easy….I tried this but didn’t even get interviews as I wasn’t in the country. I don’t know about VISA’s for you but you need to sort out all the paperwork and if you’re not european, this can take time.

Also be warned, many employers will not employ you if you don’t speak catalan….not that you will have to use it but many offers want catalan as well as english and spanish.

I don’t want to paint a grim picture, it’s not easy but if you are up for the challenge and have enough cash to keep you tied over, then go for it.

Good luck!
