I already have permanent residency in Spain. I’d like to know whether it would be possible for me to lose my residency here if I were to lose my job, for example?  Or, would I be able to renew my residency regardless?  I’ve been here for almost 18 years. Or would it be prudent to apply for nationality?  What I’d like to know is what the legal difference would be between renewing my permanent residency every 5 years, or having a Spanish passport?  Can I be denied a renewal for any reason? Thanks.

According to the immigrant spot on Radio 5, once you have been granted permanent resident status - which is after 10 years, you are permanent and therefore it doesn’t matter if you are jobless. What does citizenship give you? The right to vote and freedom to move and to live freely within Europe.
