Hi All

I have done some research on La Linea and know that it is walking distance to the Gibraltar frontier, if you live close enough I guess its about a 20-30 minutes walk, which is good if you want to get away from the long commutes into work. I would like to know are there any other areas that are walking distance into Gibraltar, not walking more than 30 minutes. Also, are there other areas that would be a short bus ride, say 15 minutes that I could consider too The reason I ask is that I live in London, and it takes door to door over 1hr 15 mins, the trains and tubes are packed liked sardines. I don’t really want the stress of commuting into work when I relocate. Ideally, it would be wonderful to live and work in Gibraltar, however the rentals are far too expensive, so have to consider looking outside.

I would appreciate your advice on other areas that I could walk or take a short bus ride into Gibraltar.

Thank you!

20-30 minutes to the border covers most of La linea but not beyond. It will take a good 30min for a fast walker to get to the border form the far end of la Linea. 30mins walk is only 2.5Km.  15-30 minutes on the buss will reach Santa Marguerita, Alcaidesa, San Roque, Los Barrios and Algeciras.
But yes it’s way better than the usual commute. 23 minutes (fast) walking door to door for me 😊

Thanks for your quick reply!  I will check out these locations.  Do you know which one of these locations is the nearest to Gibraltar? Do you know anyone who has travelled from these areas in the morning rush hour say from 07.30/08.00am to get to work in Gibraltar? Do you know the name of the bus companies so that I can research that?

Thanks again.

Gibraltar Bus Company Limited

There are five bus routes in Gibraltar (numbered one to five) and buses run to most areas of the territory apart from the Upper Rock, which is a nature reserve. The Gibraltar Bus Company runs routes 1 to 4 exclusively, with its distinctive modern fleet of blue-liveried Dennis Dart buses. These buses came into use on 28th May 2011, when the timetables and routes were also revised. Fares have increased from ?0.60 to ?1 for an adult single or ?1.50 for a “Hoppa” transferable or return ticket.

  Single   “Hoppa” Rtn.
Adult   ?1.00   ?1.50
Pensioner   ?0.80   ?1.20
Child   ?0.50   ?0.80

The Calypso Bus Company and Gibraltar Bus Company jointly run the remaining route (route 5), which is a shuttle service from Market Place to the Frontier, using a more elderly fleet of red double-decker buses. Although at first sight similar in appearance to London’s red buses, these left-hand-drive vehicles are actually secondhand from Germany (Berlin continues to operate similar double-deck buses).

Route 5 buses run regularly from the frontier/airport terminus to the city centre, this is a shuttle between Reclamation Road (British Steps) near John Macintosh Square and the frontier/airport terminus via the central bus station outside Grand Casemates Square, by the market place.

Additionally, taxis are available around the Rock. Many cater specifically to offer tours of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. These can be picked up from the frontier or the city centre, where there are a number of taxi ranks. Taxi drivers are however obliged to take normal fares as well as tours.

hope that helps

Thanks for that.  Do you know which buses from the areas you’ve mentioned.  The reason I ask is that I researched Sotogrande and there a pick up on in this area which arrives at La Linea at 08.30am, which is tight.  The last bus towards Sotogrande on this bus route is 19.45!  This bus only seems to run every 1.5hrs.  Not good.

I don’t really want to be in La Linea due to the poor reputation.  Are there any nice parts in La Linea.

Ideally, I need to be in a location that I can either walk or get regular early am buses and to get back again.

regards

Thanks for that, its really useful.

Do you know what the bus situation is like getting to the frontier?  I’ve only research one bus company, and got a print off of the timetable and it isn’t good.  Any info would be helpful.  I would like to find out if there are buses that arrive into/near the Frontier around 07.30/08.00 and if buses stop running at 23.00ish?

Thank again!

Hi coco77
I can find a flat in this aera for you, just send me a private message with your private email, because I can’t send you my private contact in the forum. Like that you can explain me where are you now, ect… And take this like an advice, don’t plan to take the bus except if you have time to go at work. Because I live in Alcaidesa and it takes 30 minutes to go with my own car, then imagine with bus!, and Sotogrande is further, ...
